Research Notes:
Summary:
John Sigvart Olson was born 15 May 1874 likely at Middle River Twp in Marshall Co, MN. On 26 Dec 1904, he was married to Maud Ann Davis (1884-1976). Around 1909-1910 they moved to the area that he had taken a hometead in the Slager/Triburne area of Saskatchewan (Sec 4, Twp 3, Range 15, W2nd). It is not clear that he received a patent since his homestead file is not available on-line. John and Maud's youngest child, Harriet was born in Saskatchewan.
Although I am not certain, but sometime before 1920 Maud and the four children are recorded in the 1920 US Census at Grenora City, Williams Co, ND (about 80 kms south of Tribune, SK). John was recorded in the 1921 Canada Census with his parents. It is not clear why they were not living together, even though they both recorded with a married marital status*. Then in the 1926 census of the Prairie Provinces, John Olson is recorded at the Weyburn Mental Hospital as a patient. Over time he became better, so that by Apr 1935 he and Maude were living together at Harve, Hill Co, Montana - this is recorded in 1940 US census, he and Maude are living together when they were enumerated on 23 Apr 1940 at Wolf Point, in Roosevelt Co, MT. John may have had a relapse or he actually died in MT. John is buried at the Weyburn Mental Hospital Cemetery with a date of death as 4 May 1940. - see point 5

4. ** there is another Ancestry FT, McFarland FT; re daughter Ruby - posted a short bio story of Dolfa A Lobdell and it appears written by him: .... born in Revere, MN ... first 8 years in MN, Gardena and Ambrose ND....at age 8, went to Old Coalridge in MT [close to ND border] ... I married Ruby Olson in 1921 and she passed away in 1929 and Mabel Olson and I were married in 1930 ... my children are Eugene in Seattle, Clarice in Kenai, AK, and Lois, Coalridge MT - MT marriages, 8 Aug 1921, Dolfa Lobell and Ruby Olson age 16 or Genroa ND, daughter of John Olson and Maude Davis - MT Marriages, has a marriage on 27 Oct 1930 record for Dolfa Lobell and Mabel Olson, age 22 of Genora, ND, daugther of Gust Olson and Helga Strand [Mabel b 18 May 1908, died 5 Aug 1987] - findagrave: Dolfa Lobdell, died 26 Sep 1973; id 84562785 - findagrave: Ruby M Lobdell, died 1929; id 130526643; Coalridge Mennonite Church Cemetery, Sheridian Co, MT; there is a small grave marker for Ruby, however, there is also large tombstone photograph "Lobdell"
** another FT, Nancie Carmichael FT - Harriet Esther Olson, Pearson; findagrave id 131492092 ; died 22 Jun 1993, Eugene OR; a posted obit: - beautician in Great Falls, and her husband farmed (Gunder Pearson) - moved to Albany OR in 1973 - Gunder died 5 yrs later and Harriet moved to Eugene - She is survived by four daughters, Jayne Faulkner of Albany, Nancy Carmichael of Sisters [Deschutes Co OR; part of Bend OR area ], Judy Volta and Kitty Bilyeu of Eugene; three sons, John of Tacoma, Dan of Conrad, Mont., and Joseph of Choteau, Mont. A brother and two sisters preceded Pearson in death.
- this also records that John Sigvart Olson's son, Kenneth died in 1993 in ND and provided a link to a findagrave post (id, 18157031). However, a careful review of the findagrave post, I believe this burial record is of another person named Kenneth Olson. The actual post records a grave marker and what looks like a family plot with a tombstone head, "Olson Kallstad". Viewing other people named Olson buried at this cemetery, there are three people and two of them have the exact same type grave marker (Kenneth Olson and Sherman Olson and suggest that these are brothers, since both had the word 'son' recorded). Due to this, I have not recorded a death or location for Kenneth Olson since I have not been able to find him
John Sigvart Olson's son, Kenneth Davis and Kominski FT on Ancestry https://www.ancestrylibrary.ca/family-tree/person/tree/167120542/person/122204900181/facts - shows a WW 2 draft card: Kenneth Eugene Olson b 28 Oct 1909 in Minneapolis - living at Grafton, Walsh Co, ND; married to Julia Amanda Olson - a minister; - died abt 1971 in Bismark

Sharon Knapp [this is her aka name] - Sharon Arthur; post of 23 Jul 2010 on Rootsweb.ancestry.com Message board "Looking for info on the family of Peter Olson 1847 Norway-1934 Tribune. By searching "John Olson, died 1940, Weyburn, SK" [general google search] - there are three posts [posts by individuals, likely using cemetery burial lists] 1. John Sigvart Olson, b 15 Jan 1874 and died 4 May 1940, buried at Saskatchewan Mental Hospital, Weyburn plot SMH - P 0502 [apparently the letter "P" refers to the Protestants who were buried in the southern part; Catolics in the north part] note: that this cemetery "abuts" Hillcrest Cemetery, Weburn findagrave id, 55931133
** Facebook post 10 Feb 2023 from Judah Zavalney: - Re; parents of John Sigvart Olson, 1874-1940 [Peder Olsen, 1847-1934] and Engeborg Erickson, 1852-1939] - and Judah makes a comment in response to some research that Mats Ahlgren done on the family [Feb 2023] along with a link to findagrave id: "...yes because his wife left him at some home for abusive drunks"
On 19 Mar 2023, I posted the following: Hi. In the 1926 Canada census of the Prairie Provinces, John Olson is recorded at the Weyburn Mental Hospital as a patient. His burial was in 1940 in the "Prostestant section" of the Saskatchewan Mental Hospital Cemetery in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. The Weyburn Mental Hospital was opened on 29 Dec 1921. It had a capacity for 900 patients, who experienced a wide variety of different mental health problems - it was not set up as an alcohol treatment center.
21 Mar 2023, Judag Zavakney: my nana this man's granddaughter [not sure of the name of the John's granddaughter] ... said that he used to work in a coal mine as well [my response follows. - This was likely Taylorton south of east of Estevan, since his younger brother, Peter Enoch [1882-1954] had lived in Taylorton. Apparently there are/were a number of underground coalmines in the area, Taylorton being one. The hamlet of Taylorton was initially known as Coalfields [location, Township 2, Range 6, W2 ]
2. John Sigvart Olson, b ?; died 4 May 1940, burial noted at Hillcrest Cemetery - links to another grave marker - "Maibelle G Olson Grayson" b 1907 died 29 Jun 1945, buried at New Tacoma Cemetery in Tacoma; id, 140573353. Notes on this post, report her father was John Olson and mother was Maude Davis; she also married G E Grayson, on 21 Oct 1925 at Plentywood, Sheridan, Montana; source, KChaffeeB on 23 Jan 2011 3. John Stewart Olson, dates as above; burial at Hillcrest Cemetery; plot P 0520; id 54613443; source is Allison - same as the first posts
Also note that there are a couple of websites that have some background on the SK Mental Hospital - opened on 29 Dec 1921 with a capacity of 900 patients [ google, Weyburn Mental Hospital, Soo Line Historical Museum, Weyburn, Saskatchewan; there are a number of photos during construction and after] - It's such a major part of Weyburn's history ... The mental hospital was a city within the city." Johnson noted that the former mental hospital was self-contained in many ways, with their own facilities and farm to feed the patients and staff at the sprawling structure, which was built in 1921. [ a new name sign was made and placed in Nov 2019 ]
