[ 12 Jul 2023 ]

- one interesting aspect of the BC Crown Land Grants - lot 6520 - 160 acres for $1 on 15 Oct 1923*
is the names on the Grant: Edward Erickson, Ida Olson and Karolina Rundquist [ the original is faded ]
- It makes sense that Ida and Karolina are Edward sisters: Ida married Peter Olson; Karolina married Anders Rundquist
- I don't have proof that the other 2 names are his sisters, but is most likely - David and Edvard's brother Halsten had died in Apr 1918. Ingeborg, also known as Ida, Karolina, and Edvard were the only surviving siblings of David. Why are their names on the grant? I can only speculate:
[1] it may be due to the fact that Edward has "no heirs" and he and his wife were not going to have children, and so he/they wanted the land to go to the his sisters or their children if he died.
[2] the other likelihood and the most probable is that Edward, Ida Olson and Karolina Rundquist were named as David's heirs when died - they inherited his land at Mud River/Punchaw. I haven't found any copy of a will or statement of estate, however, when I entered David in the BC Crown Land Grants index, the last 2 lines "Erickson, David (Estate)" and this to Lot 6520 Cariboo land district - this is the Lot that Edward and his wife lived on from at least Jun 1921 until about 1939.

- using the imapBC website [ https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/data/geographic-data-services/web-based-mapping/imapbc ]
- Lot 6520 - NE- is located in the Punchaw area

Note: BC Crown Land Grants - also record Edward Erickson, on Lot 430, Range 5, in the area north of Terrace
- he paid $80 for 80 acres; 13 Jan 1919* - but this is likely the date when it was finalized

Edward - marriage 1913, Prince Rupert BC cert: 1913-09-147986
Edward Erickson married 16 Jun 1913 at Prince Rupert; to: Julia Miller, age 42, b in England (parents, Issac and Ann Bryant)
- Edward age 46 [b 1867] address as Van Arsdol BC; * * researching for Van Arsdol post office in BC - aka Vanarsdol - this puts the location about 6 miles East of Terrace, 108 miles from Prince Rupert. This is just a bit east of the junction of the Skeena River and the Copper River. Apparently it was named after the Chief Engineer of the Grand Trunk Railway (the GTR began in Prince Rupert in 1908 and was completed to Hazelton in 1914. Doug Gent on his website (see below) mentions a few people who had land or farms in the Vanarsdol area. One of the names, "E W Erickson, mixed farm" but no other comments. This likely refers to 'our' Edward Erickson, but I'm not aware the middle initial "W".

- parents: James Erickson and Kate Hallstensdotter
- Edward born in Sweden; he is a rancher

-------------------------------------------------------
From the Gent website: he mentions the name Peter Eric Brusk, presumely b about 1865 and died on 18 Sep 1944 in Kamloops.

Interestingly, on the 1911 Canada census, BC, Comox=-Atlin, sub dis 32 [Atlin], page 6
records on line 32 - dw/fam 88/90
Edward Ericson, b Oct 1866 in Swe, em 1904 rancher
David Ericson, b Aug 1874 in US, em 1875, rancher
then the next line [34], same household
Peter Brusk, b Aug 1874 in Swe, em in 1903, miner, ??? [Gent website - found gold in 1924; had Big Copper claim on SW slope of Kiselas Mt]
then Ludwig Bergwal, b Feb 1861 in Swe, em 1910; blacksmith, employed with Railroad]

The Gent website also notes [under Axel Ebring] that there was a road or trail from Old Kitselas which apparently was also known as Kitselas Canyon and on the north side of the river, through the Durham Property to Newtown, that was also known as Vanarsdol, and also known as Dobbie's

- lived at West Quesnel [but currently not named on google maps - likely on the west side of the Fraser River] for 3 years [1939]

- informant, Julia Erickson, wife, address Quesnel ; name of father and mother not known but both born in Sweden

NOTE: attached to his brother David's death cert is a newspaper article
[Quesnel Cariboo Observer, issue 25 Apr 1942, page 1; newspapers.com]
- Edward Erickson, Mud River Rancher died 1942 and trapper
- a lingering illness forced him to move to Quesnel and bed-ridden since [death cert says in moved in 1939]
- a nephew took over the ranch and trap line when Edward moved - so about 1939 and he is likely a nephew of Julia Miller, J E Miller noted as the informant for Julia Miller / Erickson death cert
