Research Notes:
Summary:
I have little evidence on the life of Jon Jonsson b 1835. Following his direct ancestor line, he descends from the early Finnish settlers [Porkka] on the farm Fäbacken [initially in Fryskände parish and then later part of Östmark parish, ]. Following his father's line, he was my third cousin, 7 times removed. And following his mother's line, he was my "half third cousin, 4 times removed". So there is a 'double relationship'.
I know that he left Sweden in 1868. He likely went to Stockholm Twp in Wright Co, MN to the area of his sister [Marit Jonsdotter, b 1830; and the mother of John P Hedman, b 1851] and other close relations. However, I do not have much collaborating evidence. Below I have some notes, but there are many gaps. According to the 1878 MN State Census, he is recorded married, with one daughter. But his wife and daughter are not recorded again. On subsequent census records, John Johnson [Jon Jonsson] is recorded as single, but the 1911 Canada Census he is recorded as a "widow".
We do know that in the 1900 US Census he was living with the John P Hedman family in ND; and in the 1911 Canada Census he was1 living with John P Hedman family in the "Hullcar/Deep Creek" area of the North Okanagan, British Columbia [just west of Enderby-Armstrong]. In 1911 he was 75 years old, but I have not found any records of his death.
Two interesting records that record his surname as "Backman". But I am not sure if this was a name he used extensively, and or if the records are accurate. The surname Backman is recorded in Värmlänningar ... and in the Stockholm Lutheran church records in MN.
Note that some of the census records record his birth as Jun 1835, but that is not correct - Östmark parish records note is birth was on 28 Jan 1835.

[next line, is dr. Jon Persson (Hedman), b 1 Jun 1851, from Långerud; last known address is Cokato
c. Ancestry, collection, Sweden, Emigrants Registered in Church Books, 1783-1991 - record: Jon Jonson Backman, b 1835; leaving 11 Apr 1868; BUT that 'surname' is NOT recorded in Östmark parish moving out records or household record (AI:23, p 662; Ulfsjön)

image 811; John Johnson Backman, 28 Jul 1835 or 28 Jan 1835 [the month looks like "1", but there is no person named Jon b 28 Jan 1835 in Östmark parish]; received, 1874; from Östmark; arrived 1868 and then on the right column .... ??? Uts ... 24 Jan 1884 [leaves ??? moves???]
1870 US Census, Stockholm Twp, Wright Co, MN; page 13 (image 21 2nd side on ancestry), dw 86, fam 87, line 19 John Johnson, age 34 [1836] born in Sweden; [also recorded in the same household is John Peterson age 19 b in Sweden - this is most likely John P Hedman] this is likely our Jon Jonsson b 1835 the previous family is Peter Halstenson b 1723 and family and the next family is Nils Nilsson and Maria Jonsdotter b 1839 [John Johnson's sister; note this Maria Jonsdotter b 1839 is NOT the same person as Marit Jonsdotter b 1830 who was the mother of John P Hedman. BUT Maria Jonsdotter was a sister to Marit Jonsdotter, b 1830 and of course John Johnson, b 1835] ]
1875 MN State Census, Stockholm Twp, Wright Co, MN (image 178 on ancestry), fam 133 John Johnson age 39 [1836] in Sweden - this record provides little information, but it appears he is single - note Nils Nilsson is family 131 Ancestry does not seem to have him indexed in further MN State Census - where did he go ????
1800 US Census, Cokato Twp, Wright Co, ED 68 page 5, fam dw/fam 40/41 John Beckman, age 46 b in Swe [1834] likely single [surname should be Backman]
then 1885 MN State Census, Cokato Twp, Wright Co, page 21; fam 155 John Backman, age 51, b in Swe [b abt 1835] [marriage 1880/81] then spouse, Mina, age 36 in Swe; then a daugther, Emma age 4 b in MN [ 1881 ] [Emma is noted on the next page, line 41] then line 42-43, ?.. Peterson, age 45, b in Swe and Lotta Nilson age 22 b in MN
BUT there is no record in Stockholm Lutheran Church records for the birth of Emma or a marriage of Jon. Also. I have found any other church record, nor on MOMS... nor any birth/death record for either Mina or Emma Backman [17 Jul 2023]
1900 US Census, Benson Co, ND - recorded with the John P Hedman family - but record says he was single - see John Hedman's wife, Stina's re
2. Ancestry FTs (Family Trees) - Sharons Tree - nothing on Jon Jonsson, other than birth year - Brodin ... - nothing - Jones .. - nothing
BUT 1900 US Census for Benson Co, North Dakota - John P Hedman family and then at the bottom is John Johnson, uncle age 64, b Jun 1835 in Sweden; single; em 1868; no occupation
AND then, he is recorded with the John P Hedman family in the 1911 Canada Census in the Okanagan - Enderby area - see John P Hedman (b 1851) research notes; John Johnson, uncle to head family, age 75 born Jun 1835 in Sweden, em in 1868 [to US] but marital status is obscure - 'automated genealogy" transcribed as a 'W' for widow but ancestry transcribes as 'm' for married - he must have married around 1880+- 2years, since he is recorded in Cokato Twp, Wright co, MN with a daughter Emma b about 1881. Even though I can't find any other records.
SO, my hunch is that he was married, but his wife and daughter died shortly after 1885; he likely found jobs on some farms in the general area and then sometime in the late 1890's he lived with his nephew John P Hedman and went with Hedman's family to BC. But I haven't found a death record for him in BC. On the database I have recorded is death as after 1911 and recorded that he likely died in BC
------------------------------------------------------------------------- maybe? - the following may be right, but I have no collaborating evidence, and thus I haven't entered info into the database ?? 12 Jul 2020 but says John Johnson's birth 1836 in US ??? death 22 Oct 1917, age 81 years. 8 mos, 5 days - this would mean birth 17 Feb 1836; residence, Cokato [image 1231, first side - Stockholm Lutheran church records] - but Östmark birth records, birth 28 Jul 1835 findagrave, id 121945974 - Stockholm Lutheran Church Cemetery
BUT I can't find the above John Johnson in 1880 Census, nor have I come across him in the Stockholm church records
also: 1910 US Census for Cokato, ED 205, sheet 1B, dw and fam 40 John W Johnson, age 73 [1837] married at 47 years; looking at Stockholm church records: im 1124, m. 26 Dec 1883 - John J Johnson and Mary Anderson ; John em 1869 Mary, age 60 born in Sweden, mother of 10 children, 8 liv son Otto age 25 [1885] son Albert, age 23 [1887] son Charles A age 19 [1881]
then, 1900 US Census for Stockholm Twp, ED 240, sheet 4A; dw 56, 58; line 12 John J Johnson; age 60 b Mar 1840 ??? em 1860 ???; married 18 years - 1882 Mary age 49 b Sep 1850; mother 3 children, 1 living ??? died daugher Annie b Feb 1877 - ???? 5 years before marriage ??? or from her first marrage ??? son Oscar L, b Jan 1880 or Jun 1880 ??? daughter Alin b Jul 1886
Noted events in his life were:
1. Emigration. 1868: Leaving for North America, 11 Apr 1868, Östmark, Värmland län, Sweden. 8936,8938 Leaving Östmark parish for America, 11 Apr 1868. Note that this is the same date as his nephew, Jon Persson (John Peterson Hedman, b 1851)
Jon married Mina.
