bullet  Research Notes:

NOTE: there appears to be a confusing note on the Brodin Ostlund FT on Ancestry, and that this FT records a child of Olof Halstensson (b 1838 in Östmark) and Sigrid Jonsdotter (b 1841 in Östmark), named "Edwin Frederick Hallsten, born in 1889 in ND". With andditional research, I believe that there is a mistake in the recording.

On the Brodin ... FT, the person named "Edwin Frederick Hallsten, born in 1889 in ND" is fact the son of Hallsten Olof Hallsten (b 1862) and therefore would be a grandson to Olof Halstensson (b 1838). A note that is attached to the page for "Edwin Frederick Hallsten, b 1889" and written by Cathie Carlisle and Gloy [Hallsten] provides some clarification.

Using the note and futher research, I have concluded:
1. There are 2 people named Edwin Hallsten and both lived for a number of years in Eddy Co, ND. Their ages were about 10 years apart.
2. The oldest was Edwin Hallsten and he was born in 1879 in MN and his parents were Olof Hallstenson (b 1838) and Sigrid Jonsdotter (b 1841). He is mentioned in point 4 below, with the note from "Gloy".
3. The other Edwin Hallsten was born in 1889 in ND and his parents of Hallsten Olof Hallsten (b 1862) and Tilda - the first noted noted in point 4 below and written by Cathie Carlisle.
4. For an unknown reason the Brodin Ostlund family tree has not corrected the mistake and of course this led to my confusion.

1. Birth and Death dates from ND Public Death Index

- also : from John johansson Släktträd FT on Ancestry

Note: the 1880 US Census Stockholm Twp, Wright Co, MN records his birth as Sept - 8 mos old as of 1 Jun 1880

2.
findagrave, id 134077279 ; Edwin Hallsten, Sheyenne, died 8 Apr 1949 - this should be the right person, since the date of death corresponds, but the over-all posts and links are confusing but can be :
and this links to a son, Erland A Hallsten, b 12 Apr 1917 and died 28 Nov 1989 and buried at Riverside Cemetery, Sheyenne; he served in US Army WW 2
- and Erland's findagrave links to his mother, Mathilda Lameda "Masterson" Mason [suggests she was married 3 times]; She was also known as "Nellie"

* explanation: Edwin Hallsten, 1879-1949 was married for a short time to Nellie Mastersson. They had adopted a son named Erland Hallsten. Edwin and Nellie divorced and she moved away. Edwin continued to live in Eddy County ND. Erland also continued to live in Eddy Co, but it is not clear if they lived together. I have not been able to find him indexed in the 1930 US Census, on ancestry.
- the link to Edwin Hallsten's wife, Nellie, records that she remairred in 1929 to John J Masson b 1885 in MI - he and Nellie are recorded in the 1930 US Census at Noble Twp, LaPorte Co, IN, but Erland is not recorded with them [this record notes that they were married and with their ages, marriage would have been about 1929]

3. US Census

1920 US Census, Eddy Co, ND; Gates Twp, Ed 91; sheet 5A; dw 88, fam 91; line 2
Edwin Hallsten, age 40 [1880] b in ND, farm labor [ actually b in MN ]
wife Nellie L, age 32 [1888] b in Indiana
adopted son, Erland A, age 2 years and 7 months [Jun 1917] b in ND ; his father b in IA and his mother b in ND
Grace Whetzler, step daugther, age 15, born Ohio [1905]
Levie Masterson, father in law, age 60 [1860] b in Indiana, widow [ he died 1931 - findagrave link]

1930 US Census, Eddy Co, ND: New Rockford, ED 12, sheet 18A, line 5
Edwin Holstein, age 50 b in MN; lodger; marital status 'D' [odd handwriting, but shape corresponds to the letter 'D' in marital status, so it implies he was divorced]
father and mother born in Sweden; under occupation, looks like "Plumber" but hard to say, then industry, 'odd jobs'

1940 US Census, Benson Co, North Dakota; Twin Tree Twp, ED 3-39; sheet 1B, line 71
Edwin Hallsten, age 60 [abt 1880] working as a hired hand; marital status: D = divorced

Erland Hallsten
1940 US Census, Eddy Co ND; Ed 14-20 (Twp149, r 65), sheet 1A, line 37
indexed as Earland Halstine, age 23 [1917], b in ND; farm labor

From Gloy:
[referring to Edwin Frederick Hallsten]: Fred (1889-1976) was born near Sheyenne, then Dakota Territory, to H.O. [this would have to be Hallsten Olof Hallsten, b 1862] and Tilda Jacobson Hallsten. He was the oldest of seven children. .. the Hallstens had come here to homestead.
Fred attended grade schools in town and in 1912 became a mail carrier....he served in the Army during WWI.,
Married in 1923. We had two children: Allard and Frankie. ... Allard eventually moved to Missoula, MT.

** by 1997 she remarried Dewaine Olson from Washurn; she she was married to Mark Ellingston but maybe divorced, since he had died in 2001 - they had two sons, Jeffery Ellingson living in 1997 at St Louis Park in MN and Mark Ellingson living in Newburg NJ [ from Bismark Tribune, 21 Mar 2007; Dewaine Olson obit]; Janice Hallsten's first husband was Mark William Ellingston (1945-2001) [this from Bismark Tribune, 26 Jan 2001; Mark Ellingson obit]
