Carl Johan Grahn [written by Rueben D Grue, 4 Apr 2020. Copywrite. All rights reserved]
As my research notes indicate, Karl Johan Grahn's mother was Maria Jonsdotter. He was born on 28 March 1811 at the farm/village of Granträst in Lycksele parish, Västerbotten. The birth/baptism record records that Karl Johan was born "oäkta", meaning 'born outside of marriage'. Karl Johan's father is not known.
Karl Johan and his mother Maria Jonsdotter lived with Maria's father at Granträst (Jon Philipsson, b 1721). On 18 May 1834 he moved to Bjurholm parish, and likely begins working at the farm/village of Balsjö (some early records use the spelling, Balhsjö). It is here that in 1836 is marries Maria Magdalena Hansdottter (b 1814). Also, about this time he and his wife are living with his mother and her husband (his mother died in in 1838). Around this time, Carl Johan begins to use the surname Grahn (some records use the spelling Gran). Note also that some records spell his name as Karl, while others it is spelled Carl. It is somewhat unsual that Carl Johan would adopt a different surname. Usually a person would use their patronymic name as their last name. However, it is possible that as a child or a young adult he did not know the name of his father, and so he would not have had patronymic name. In general terms, it appears that "Grahn" is derived from either a pine or spruce tree, that were likely common in the area. The surname Grahn may first have been spelled Gran and may have been a shorten form of the farm/village of Granträst where he was born.
Carl Johan Grahn and Maria Magdalena had 10 children and all born in Bjurholm parish, likely the farm/village of Balsjö. In 1862, Carl Johan and most family members move to Granträst in Lycksele parish and then in 1863, Carl Johan and many of the children move again to Långbäcken/Bäcknäs in Fredrika parish. I have not been able to locate Långbäcken (see 'event notes').
Most of Carl Johan Grahn's children moved away from Fredrika parish, to either Lycksele or Åsele parish. Carl Johan and Maria continued to live at or near Långbäcken/Bäcknäs in Fredrika parish for the remaining years of their lives. However, it seems that they did not own a farm that they could pass on to one of their children. In their later years they were considered very poor and were likely dependent on help from others and the the parish. Carl Johan Grahn died in 1891 and his wife died later in 1898. It appears that they were buried at the Lycksele churchyard.

Carol Johan in 1878 was about age 66
with the exception of son Efraim, 1853, who moves to page 153 which is Långbäcken, BUT then he moves to Lycksele parish in 1877 AND daughters Carolina and Anna Stina move to Lycksele parish 15 Oct 1876
NOTE: By 1877 all of the children of Carl Johan Grahn and his wife have left Långbäcken. In 1878, Carl and his wife are considered homeless and likely are supported by Fredrika parish Church.

Noted events in his life were:
1. Residence, 1811-1891, 1811-1891, Västerbotten Län, Sweden. Throughout Carl Johan Grahn's life, he moved a number of times, usually within about 50 kms. Granträst, Lycksele parish: 1811-1834 Balsjö, Bjurholm parish: 1834-1862 Granträst, Lycksele parish: 1862-1863 Bäcknäs/Långbäcken, Fredrika parish: 1863-1891
NOTE: Granträsk is about 50 kms south-west of Lycksele and Balsjö, Bjurholm parish is 75 kms south-east of Granträst [note träst seems to refer to bog, marshes or swamp, but also maybe woods). Fredrika parish is about 50 kms to the west and north of Balsjö - I can't find the place name of Bäcknäs. There is a place named Långbäcken and from the map it looks like it less than 10 kms south-west of Granträst - it could be near the north-west boundary of Fredrika parish [?]
Karl married Maria Magdalena Hansdotter on 18 Dec 1836 in Bjurholm, Västerbotten län, Sweden.8797 (Maria Magdalena Hansdotter was born on 2 Dec 1814 in Bjurholm, Västerbotten län, Sweden 8800 and died on 24 Apr 1898 in Fredrika parish, Västerbotten län, Sweden 8801.)
