Research Notes:
Jöns Pålsson: 1701-1785
Written by Rueben D Grue, 29 Jan 2019; Revised: 17 Oct 2019 © 2019 All rights reserved.
In researching the parents of my 6th great grandmother, Kerstin Jönsdotter (1730-1818), I have used primarily three sources:
1. Överhogdal parish records. There are no household record books available prior to 1808. However there is a volume of births, marriages, and deaths \endash volume C:1, 1691-1861. By using this volume, I have been able to reconstruct Jöns Pålsson's family, although I am not sure if I have all children or dates correct. It should be noted that the handwriting in this volume is at times difficult. [reference code, birth marriage death, C1, page …] 2. Ancestry.com Public Member Tree owner Kjell Bornsäter; [reference code, KB; see note 1] 3. Märit Eleonore Hjelm database \endash see note 2 and 3
I have mostly used the Överhogdal parish records to record Jöns Pålson's family, supplemented by information from Kjell Bornsäter and Märit Hjelm family data. The accuracy of the information may not be at a high level of confidence, but over-all it is likely graded at a 'probable level' of accuracy. Although the information is not provable and may contain errors, I think what I have recorded are reasonable conclusions.
Jöns Pålsson
The ancestry.com family tree [KB] records his efternamn as "Pålsson". This was the first time I found a name for Kerstin Jönsdotter's father. Bornsäter FT on Ancestry records that Jöns Pålsson lived at "Sätern", but the place name was most likely known as "Säter". Although the handwriting in the parish record is often difficult to read, most record his efternamn as "Pålsson". From the Överhogdal parish births/baptisms records, the name of Jöns Pålsson's wife is not recorded. However, his death record does record her name as Kierstin Jönsdotter.
Jöns Pålsson's birth and death, marriage: born 1701, Älvros; died 15 Mar 1785, Säter, Överhogal (Z) C:1 (1691-1861) Image 1120 / Page 213, 1st side, 1st entry]
Jons Pålsson's death record includes a number of comments. The following is a translation of the death record provided on 25 Jan 2019 by Andreas Engström, a member of the Facebook group, "Swedish American Genealogy":
"The old man Jon Påhlsson from Säter, who was born in Elfros 1701, and for 56 years been married to his still living wife Kierstin Jönsdotter, with whom he has had 2 sons who are dead, and 6 daughters, who still live. Lived quietly and died from coughing and shortness of breath the 15th of March 80 years old."
Note that "Elfros" is an older spelling of the current parish of Älvros. From the above, we also have his year of marriage (1729) and the name of the Jon's wife, Kerstin Jönsdotter who was still alive in 1785. Her death record is recorded in 1788 [Överhogdal (Z) C:1 (1691-1861) Image 1120 / Page 213, 2nd side, 1788 1st entry]. Kerstin died on the 5 Mar 1788 and she was born in 1702; buried at age 86 years. Kerstin married at age 27 <1729> to Jon Påhlsson and they had 2 sons and 6 daughters with 5 daughters still alive. [18 Apr 2020: I had written the following comment in late January 2019 or possibly in Oct 2019. BUT the statement no longer makes any sense, since there clearly is a death record death record for Kerstin Jönsdotter for 5 Mar 1788: "Note that there is no record of a person with the efternamn of "Jönsdotter" with a death between 1785 and 1788 at Överhogdal. So it is most likely that this daughter, who had died sometime between 1785-1788, had likely married and her death was recorded in some other parish"].
From Kerstin's death record (my 6th great-grandmother), it appears that Kerstin Jönsdotter (b 1701-02) was born in Överhogdal parish since another parish is not mentioned. However, in Överhogdal parish there is no daughter by the name of Kerstin (or various spelling variations) born in 1701. But there is a record of the birth of Kerstin (although the handwriting is a bit difficult) and she baptised 6 Oct 1701. It seems that the parents are not named in this death/burial records. The only other names are the witnesses [Överhogdal (Z) C:1 (1691-1861) Image 160 / Page 21, last entry at bottom - note that the record spans both sides of the page]. If you use a death date of 5 Mar 1788 and birth date of Oct 1701, the age at death would be 86 years and 5 months. It is likely that this is the correct birth/baptism record for the birth of Kerstin Jönsdotter born in Sep or Oct 1701, but this is not certain. The most accurate record would likely be Kerstin's death record of 1788. I have recorded her birth as "1701-02".
Jöns Pålsson's childen:
The first child born is my 6th grandmother:
Kerstin, b 26 Sep 1730, page 45, 1 side at top [C1]; Kerstin died in 1818, Ytterhogdal [see note 4] and then, Gölin, b 3 Feb 1734, page 45, 2nd side, top [C1]; likely died 1800 [C1, p 217 2nd side, top] Jöns, b 15 Jan 1737, p 47, 1st side [C1]; Jöns died 20 Mar 1737 [C1, p 191, 1st side] Karin, b 8 Jun 1739, p 47, 1st side, bottom [C1] ; death unknown, but after 1788 Pål, b 3 Jan 1742, p 47, 2nd side [C1]; Pål died, 24 Jun 1743 [p 191, 2nd side] Anna, b 27 Jun 1744 p 49, 1st side [C1] ; died 10 Jul 1818, Rätan parish; [see note 2] Brita, b 27 Jun 1744, p 49, 1st side [C1] ; died 16 Mar 1824 [C1, p 223, 1st bottom; see note 3] [unknown daughter, birth isn't recorded in Överhogdal parish (birth in another parish?); death unknown]
From the parents death record, it is recorded that had they had 2 sons and that both had died (Jöns and Pål, died young, see above). The death record in 1785 for Jöns Pålsson also notes that he had 6 daugthers who are still living. The death record for his wife in 1788 notes that 5 daughters are still living. One difficulty is that I have only found the birth record for 5 daughters. Who is the sixth daughter and why isn't she recorded in the Överhogdal birth/baptism book for the years 1724-1760 (in 1750 Kerstin would have been age 48; I also reviewed births from 1750-1760, and in 1760 Kerstin would have been age 58)?
There are only 4 possible explanations: (1) the number of daughters noted in Jöns Pålsson death record of 1785 is incorrect - instead of 6 daugthers, it should have been 5 daughters; (2) the parish priest mistakenly did not record a birth/baptism of an 'unknown daughter'; (3) 'unknown daughter' was born in another parish; (4) I have also not found a death date for daughter Karin (born 1739) and so the daughter who died sometime between 1785-1788 could possibly be Karin and she may have died in some other parish. Although, I may never be able to determine which of the 4 explanations would be correct, I suspect that "number 1" is likely correct.
(note: the distance between Överhogdal parish and Ytterhogdal is about 15 kms; to Rätan about 25+ kms to Älvros about 30+ kms; to Sveg about 40+ kms).
NOTES
1.Kjell Bornsäter's Family Tree names Jöns Pålsson has the father of Kerstin Jönsdotter (b 1730 died in 1818 at Rullbo, Ytterhogdal parish. See her and her husband's research notes and source citations. Bornsäter's Family Tree states that Jöns Pålsson died in 17 Aug 1758 at Sätern, Överhogdal parish. However, this information is not correct since I had reviewed the actual death record at Överhogdal parish, as well, as a translation of the record (by Andreas Engström) The person who died on 17 Aug 1758 was "Jöns Persson". Additonally Andreas Engström confirmed that the birth record for Kerstin Jönsdotter names her father as "Jöns Pålsson". See appendix one for background detail.
2.daughter, Anna Jönsdotter, born 27 Jun 1744
There is a family tree on line owned by "Märit Eleonore Hjelm" (it isn't clear when this was updated, but at least sometime after 2012). Link to her home page, <http://www.mariehem.se/marits-anor/index.htm>. I am not sure of the relationship at this point, but the link to Anna Jönsdotter is: <http://www.mariehem.se/marits-anor/p5d65e76c.html>.
This FT (reference code, MH) records Anna's father as Jon Pålsson (no dates or spouse are recorded) and that Anna was born 27 Jun 1744 at Säter, Överhogdal and that she had a twin sister [Tvillingsyster] Brita Jönsdotter. MH also notes that they received a "home/private baptism" [ Barnen nöddöptes 1744-06-29 ]. Anna Jönsdotter died 10 Jul 1818 at Nederhögen, Rätan parish, Jämtland. She was married to Hindric Löfberg (1746-1789) and that they had 9 children (3 died as infants). She was married on 4 Feb 1770 at Rätan parish. [Rätan (Z) C:1 (1695-1792) Image 890 / Page 167; does not name father ]. Death on 10 Jul 1818 [Death, Rätan (Z) C:2 (1793-1856) Image 1060 / Page 199 [ this record does not name her father ].
Märit Eleonore Hjelm's data indicates that Hindric Löfberg was a soldier and it had been reported that he died at Göteborg since his soldier place (or number) at Göteborg regiment had been taken over by someone else. Märit Hjelm notes a source for his death as the, "Generalmönsterrullor" on Sweden Riksarkivet, but I have not researched this source. Märit Hjelm also records that Anna Jönsdotter had a twin sister, Brita. According to this database, Anna Jönsdotter had 9 children with 3 children who died as very young. Märit Hjelm possibly descends from Anna Jönsdotter's oldest child, Gertrud Hindricsdotter (1770-1820) since she records a number of notes for Gertrud but not for other children of Anna Jönsdotter. At this point, I have not recorded the names etc of any of the children of Anna Jönsdotter (b 1744) or any descendents.
3. daughter, Brita Jönsdotter, born 27 Jun 1744
Brita Jönsdotter's birth record on page 49 (C1) has a notation on the left side of the page, "död en 16 Mar 1824". In reviewing the death record (C1, P 223, 1st side, bottom), "Old farmer's daughter, Brita Jönsdotter at Säter". She died of "old age" at the age of 79 years, 8 months and 29 days.
Överhogdal parish household records are not available prior to 1808. The household record for the year of her death (1824) is contained in volume AI:2 (1822-1831, page 2, Kyrkbyn) and she is recorded at the bottom of the page, as "pig" Brita Jönsdotter b 1744 and died 1824. At the top of this page is the name, Jon Pehrsson born 11 Sep 1779 at Överhogdal parish and married in 1802 to Golin Ersdotter born 28 Apr 1771 at Överhogdal; they have 4 children recorded. In the previous volume (AI:1, 1808-1821, page 2 Säter), Brita Jönsdotter is recorded on the 4th line, and here the record says, "mother" Brita Jönsdtr, '1744. Above her name is "father", Pehr Jonsson, b '1734" - his name is crossed off and just above it written, "död 4 Jun 1818". At the top of the page is the name Jon Pehrsson born 11 Sep 1779, married and 4 children \endash this is the same family as recorded in volume AI:2. Thus Brita Jönsdotter (b 1744) was married to Pehr Jönsson (1734-1818).
Jon Pehrsson (b 1779) and his family continues to be recorded at Säter in subsequent volumes (Överhogdal (Z) AI:3 (1831-1845) Image 80 / Page 2, and Överhogdal (Z) AI:3 (1831-1845) Image 430 / Page 2; Överhogdal (Z) AI:4 (1846-1862) Image 70 / Page 2. In volume AI:4 he is recorded as död in 1846. His death record does not record the names of his parents (Överhogdal (Z) C:1 (1691-1861) Image 1220 / Page 233).
4.daughter, Kerstin Jönsdotter 1730-1818
Kerstin Jönsdotter was of course my 6th great grandmother. I have completed a chart showing the direct line to my grandmother, Avey Rangborg Skaret (1890-1960).
In order to further confirm Kerstin Jönsdotter's (b 1730) father, I had on 25 Jan 2019 requested Andreas Engström, a member of the Facebook group "Swedish American Genealogy", to translate the name of Kerstin Jönsdotter's father from her birth record. This is his translation/comment: "The father of that Kerstin is called Jon Pålsson".
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Note: I have saved on my PC the complete article, along with a family chart and I have included "Appendix One". This provides some additional information, but most of this is related to documents regarding "Jöns Persson" born about 1679 and died in 1758. As I have indicated, I had mistaken this "Jöns" with my 7th great grandfather. I have included this as an article "appendix" and currently in z-folder.

5. Ancestry.com FT. 18 Apr 2020; searched: Jöns Pålsson born 1701 in Älvros parish; died 1785 in Ytterhogdal [exact]
"Torbjöns DNA". Although I am not 100% certain, I believe this a FT of Torbjörn Näs. He has made many posts on Anbytarforum and I have often quoted him and copied some of this information when researching in Fryksände and Östmark parishes, researching "ancestors of my 2nd great grandfather, Erik Andersson 1843-1921".
- Torbjön records that Jöns Pålsson's father was Pål Östensson but has no other information. He says the residence is "Remmen, Älvros" but I'm not sure if this refer to Jöns or Pål - following Torbjön's direct line, we have the following: Jöns Pålsson his daughter, Kerstin Jonsdotter, (1730-1818), and her husband, Måns Jönsson 1827-1816 their daughter, Kerstin Månsdotter, 1764-1843 (Rullbo) and her husband, Jonas Andersson (1750-1821) their son, Anders Jönsson (1787-1865) and his wife Kerstin Olofsdotter, 1798-1884 ['our' direct line, son Jon Andersson born 1819) and their son, Magnus Andersson (1835-1931) and his wife, Brita Persdotter 1834-1928 and their son, Johan Olof Magnusson (1871-1954) and his wife, Marta Klaar (1873-1945) and their daughter, Judit Birgitta Magnusson (1898-1986) and her husband, Nils Herman Olsson (1896-1972) and their daughter, Majlis Magnusson (1922-2010) and her husband, Gunnar Näs (1923-1990) and then their son, "private"
- Torbjön does record any sources, but from the title, his information is likely based on DNA results
Jöns married Kerstin Jönsdotter in 1729 in Jämtland län, Sweden.8304 (Kerstin Jönsdotter was born 1701 or 1702 in Överhogdal, Jämtland, Sweden 8305 and died on 5 Mar 1788 in Överhogdal, Jämtland, Sweden 8305.)
