DID YOU EVER HEAR OF LAMERTON ALBERTA\emdash THE TOWN THAT DIED FOR THE WANT OF A HIGHER PRICE (Photo\emdash Lamerton in 1910 courtesy of Prairie-towns.com)
The post office opened in 1893, with a fellow named Bredin as postmaster. Pioneers in the area were British, so they named their new community after Lamerton in jolly old England. The exact location was Sec. 33, Twp. 40, R. 22, W4M, a mere stone's throw north and east of the present day town of Mirror. (About thirty miles nearly straight east of Lacombe.)
H.B. Chenoweth at Ghosttowns.com says the community was first started in 1892 as a trading post and storehouse for travelers using the Tail Creek to Edmonton trail. There were only seven settlers in the area at the time.
The town eventually had a lumberyard, creamery, blacksmith, hardware store, two butcher shops, livery stables, post office, general store, dance hall, meeting hall, and Methodist Church. The attached photo shows it as kind of a pretty place.
Lamerton's demise was not the story so often heard about the railroad bypassing a community. Instead, the Grand Trunk Pacific came right through Lamerton in 1910-11. Chenoweth says the railway wanted land for its use but the property owner held out for too high a price. So the Grand Trunk simply decided to build its own new town site two miles south of the original community.
As soon as the new site was surveyed, Lamerton business people began moving their buildings to the new town site and started over again. By 1912, Lamerton was all but deserted and the town soon passed into history. The Lamerton post office closed in 1913. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palmer Larsen Olson - findagrave id,136664378 findagrave post [by Linda Payne - also FT on ancestry] an OBIT OBIT: Palmer L Olson "The Monitor" Lidgerwood, Richland Co ND; issued 10 Oct 1901, page 2 - died 4 Oct 1901 - P L Olson of Park Township killed: An accident - was in the city and drove home, driving a team hitched to a lumber wagon - he was cold, so he walked leading his team, but the horses became frighten - Olson was found lying on the ground; Soland, a neighbor was travelling with him on a separate team. Soland and C H Estell, who lived near by, moved the body and discovered that Olson was dead - a wheel had passed over his head, crushing the skull - P L Olson had resedied on the farm in Park Twp for the past 8 yrs [abt 1893], comming from Belgrade, MN - leaves his wife and 6 children, three sons and three daughters. The 2 oldest daughters reside in MN [Matilda and Evelena] and arrived to attend the funeral [Tues, 8 Oct 1901]

She was married to Palmer Larsen Olson (born 1849 in Wisconsin and died 1901 in ND).

- findagrave id 124184039, buried at Mirror Cemetery, b 1881 and died 16 Jun 1949, along with graves for wife and his children most buried at Mirror - south Bashaw ], with wife Bertha and daughter Endna; Louis arriving in 1902; 1906 Canada - search through Automated Genealogy - the family above Louis is the family of D A Gagnon (born in Manitoba; age 43<1863>), and likely his son Allen age 19 born MB (b 1887) and then wife Carrie, age 47 <1859> born in Sweden arriving in Canada 1902; then next line is Melvin Olson (stepson) age 14, then Prudence age 11 (step-daughter), then Cordelia age 7 (step-daughter) [ the last children, etc born in US and arriving 1902 .... so the most likely scenario:
.... Carrie came to Canada with her son, Louis (who was about age 20) and Louis' wife, Bertham, in 1902 and the rest of the children; she then remarried to D A Gagnon, later moving to Vancouver where she died [there is a BC death cert for Carrie Gagnon, age 56 <1858> and dying on 18 Apr 1914; [BC Registration Number: 1914-09-139422; B.C. One of their children, Louis Seymour Olson was born in 1881 in MN and died 1949 in Edmonton, AB, but buried at Mirror. At some point, Louis homesteaded in Alberta - married in Ponoka with his children born at Lamerton, AB (south of Bashaw, north or Mirror) or the Ripley district, etc --- note findagrave ( http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=124184039 ) obituaries .... - the findagrave posts, links to a number of his children ...
