Peter Johnsen Skaret, 1883-1966

Biographical Sketch

Peter Johnsen Skaret was born in 1883. His baptism record on the Norway Parish Registers records his given name as Per with his father recorded as John Andreasen Skaaret and his mother as Kersti Persdatter. Our family relationship is through Peter's paternal grandmother, Pernille Ottersdatter who was a sister to my 3rd great grandfather, Per Ottersen Skaaret (1806-1884). He is my 2nd cousin, 3 times removed.

Peter Johnsen Skaret was married on 9 Jun 1909 in Trysil parish to Karoline Gjermundsdatter (born in 1891). Peter is recorded living at Skaaret in 1900 and the farm Norgaard (a part of Skaaret) in 1910 Norway Census. In the 1910 Norway census he recorded with his wife and daughter, Kersti Jenny, and with his mother Kersti Persdatter.

Both the records of the 1916 and 1921 Canada census, records that Peter left Norway and emigrated to Canada in 1914. The Canadian census records state Peter living in the Spirit River (Alberta) settlement. In reviewing the Alberta Homestead records, the location of Peter's homestead is about 7 kms south of the current village of Rycroft.

Peter lived on the homestead until about 1924 or 1925 (he last paid taxes on this land in 1925). As early as 1928, Peter is living in the Prince George, BC area. As indicated in the "event notes", there are a series of articles regarding Peter as a prospector, prospecting east of Prince George at a creek being his name, Skaret Creek. Apparently he had first come across some gold deposits as around 1925 but it wasn't until the summer of 1931 or 1932 that Peter and his son John started working the claim. In a newspaper article (the Prince George Citizen, 20 Oct 1932) it is reported that in 1931 Peter, along with Fred Petersen, prospected the area that Peter had gone over years earlier. From this prospecting it seemed like a 'mini gold strike' in the area of Skaret Creek started, although it is not known or recorded the actual value. One estimate indicated a sample of gold ore at a value of almost $600 per ton (close to $10,000 in today's values), but how much was recovered is unknown. Some reports indicated uncertainty, with one article in 1932 titled, "Opinion divided on Skaret Creek Gold" and suggested that area had first been prospected during the Cariboo gold strike of the 1860's.

Peter continued to live in Prince George until about 1963. I have found no mention of his wife Karoline living in Prince George, but his son John and Gilbert had lived in Prince George starting as early as 1935 (BC cities and towns directories). John lived in the Prince George area from about 1935-1942. At some point, John, his wife and daughter had moved the area north of Westlock, Alberta around 1955.

Peter died on 2 May 1966 at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. He is buried at the Provincial Home Cemetery in Kamloops, BC. I have not found a written obituary. Peter had been living in Kamloops since Sept 1963 (his death certificate notes that he had been living in Kamloops for 2 years and 8 months). His address at the time of his death (421 Columbia St, Kamloops) is the current location of Ponderosa Lodge, built in 1974. Prior to the opening of Ponderosa Lodge, the site was the location of the Provincial Home for Old Men. I found an article (google search) from the Kamloops Museum (see my computer folder). This article reviews the history of the Provincial Home for Old Men. In short, the Provincial Home for Old Men in Kamloops was established in the mid-1890's for older men who spent a life of hunting, trapping, and prospecting in central and northern BC. Most of the men were single or widowers. A cemetery had also been established nearby as a burial place for those who died at the Provincial Home for Old Men (apparently there are only a few markers remaining, one of which belongs to Peter J Skaret). This home had some major renovations and repairs in 1957. The building was torn down in 1972 to make way for the building of Ponderosa Lodge.

Although I have not found definitive proof that Peter lived at the Provincial Home at the time of his death, this is most likely based on the permanent address recorded on his death certificate (BC Archives). As indicated, he does have a tombstone that can be viewed on findagrave.

Further research is needed on others in his family. His son John is recorded in a community history book for the Westlock, Alberta area (this book is not available on-line but is listed in the Edmonton Public Library). His son Gilbert's death is posted on findagrave at Hazel Bluff Cemetery, west of Westlock. Gilbert died in 1989. BC Archives has a digital copy of his death certificate; at the time of his death he was living in Vancouver (as noted on the Legacy database, he had lived in Prince George and Vancouver in the 1940's. The Hazel Bluff Cemetery also has a tombstone for "Karoline Skaret Bagnall", 1891-1969. This is likely Peter's wife and it is likely that at some point she remarried, but I can't confirm this at this point.

5. General google search: 'Skaret in BC' brings up "Skaret Creek", about 40 kms east of Vanderhoof -- this is a google map, 2007. This location is about 1 km to the shore of Cluculz Lake. See notes under his son, John, re; Culcultz Lake Resort, point 4 (also on a Map on Mapcarta - last access on 17 Sep 2023).
It is possible that the place name of 'Skaret Creek' is a mistake - scrolling to this to the area east of PG and south
part of Tabor Lake, Mapcarta records the Skaret Creek. Mapcarta seems to note many areas that google maps do not.
But using google maps street view of the above area, there is a creek that flows under Highway 97 - a road sign notes that this is "Cluculz Creek" - this creeks widens and flows into Cluculz Creek. For awhile Beatrice Skaret's parents or brother operated Cluculz Lake resort [see John Skaret's page, point 4]

BUT, Tabor Lake and thus Skaret Creek is about 20 kms east of Prince George, 2017 Google Map
http://www.em.gov.bc.ca/dl/PropertyFile/NMI/093G15_Au2.pdf;
- also used the BC Wildfire map - starting at the bridge of Six Mile Lake Road

"...Skaret Creek, situated due east of Prince George, flows northwesterly into Tabor Creek, a short distance below
Tabor Lake. Tabor Creek flows south from its mouth on Tabor Lake. Tabor Creek is crossed by a small bridge on Six Mile Lake Road. Less than 500 meters after the bridge on Six Mile Lake Road, Tabor Creek is joined by Skaret Creek. Tabor Creek then continues to flow in southern and westerly direction to just north of the rural area knowns as Buckhorn when it turns north for a short while and then west again. CN railroad crosses over it, as well as, Willow-Gale Forest Road. Just west of this, Tabor Creek flows into the Fraser River.

Two and one-half miles upstream from the mouth of Skaret Creek, it receives a tributary, Corless Creek. Activity centered mainly around the confluence of these two latter creeks.
A discovery of fairly coarse gold on bed-rock was made on Skaret creek in the fall of 1931 by P. Skaret. Handmining of the gravels followed for the remainder of the field season.
Other claims in the area, included those of F. Peterson, next to the Discovery claim; that of 0. Olson, the fourth
claim below the Discovery claim; and the seven claim group of E. Corless, situated on Corless creek about 1% miles above the mouth.

"Martin and Peter Skaret are very busy just now getting things in shape for their long trip to the Grand prairie country. Henry Hanson will accompany them to Spirit river returning in March."

- This would likely mean that Martin Olsen Skaret and Peter Skaret had first made their way to Grandpa Ole Skaret's place. Martin left Trysil Norway on 27Jul 1914. Peter Skaret and family also left Trysil Norway in Jul 1914, although I have not found a record of this. Peter and family and Martin had registered on 5 Aug 1914 at Kristiania and sailed on 7 Aug 1914 (Digital Archives, Emigrants from Kristiania, 1871-1930, edited version) and arrived at Ellis Island on 28 Aug 1914 (https://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/passenger)

bullet  Noted events in his life were:

1. Birth - 1883, 11 Oct 1883, Ljørdalen, Skåret, Trysil, Hedmark, Norway. 6548 His given name is recorded as 'Per' in the Norway Parish Register birth record. When he came to Canada he used the given name 'Peter'.

2. Residence, 1900, 3 Dec 1900, Ljørdalen, Skåret, Trysil, Hedmark, Norway. 6555 Farm: Skaaret, gnr 11; bnr 2. Head of household is Peter's mother, Kersti born in 1854. Also recorded his is brother August born in 1880 and his grandfather, Andreas J Skaaret born in 1825. Note that Peter's father had died in 1897

3. Residence 1910, 1 Dec 1910, Ljørdalen, Skåret, Trysil, Hedmark, Norway. 6556 Farm: Nordgaard, Gnr. 11, Bnr. 14. Head of Household is Per J Skaaret born 11 Oct 1883; wife, Karoline Skaaret born 3 May 1905, daughter Kersti Jenny Skaaret born 1 Oct 1910. Also recorded is Per's (Peter's) mother, Kersti P Skaaret born 28 Sept 1854.

4. Migration - 1914, 7 Aug 1914, Alberta, Canada. 6557,6558,6559 Peter J Skaaret and family likely arrived in Canada sometime in Sep/Oct 1914. However, the family is not recorded in the "out-migration" records for Tyrsil Parish (but Martin Olsen Skaret is). A cousin, Martin Skaret's obituary notes that he had emigrated in 1914. However, in the 1926 Canadian Prairie Provinces, his wife Caroline's emigration is recorded as 1917 (living in Edmonton) and his son John's emigration is recorded as 1916 (living in Armena).

Using Norway Digital Archives, I found Peter, Karoline, and Martin, on a transcribed index, Emigrants from Kristiania, 1871-1930, edited version (see research notes). I then found them on the "Ellis Island Passenger Records", arriving at Ellis Island on 28 Aug 1914. It is likley they left shortly after for Alberta, and most likely by train either from New York to Montreal or Toronto and then west, or from New York to Minnesota and then into Canada.

Both Peter and Martin Skaret are at Ole Skaret's place in Armena in Jun 1915, when they are preparing to go to the homestead.

5. Homestead - 1915, 15 Jun 1915 to 20 May 1920, Rycroft, Alberta, Canada. 6560 Homestead Entry: SW ¼ Sec 22, Twp 77, Range 5, West of the 6th. His name is recorded as Per Johnsen Skaret. The location of Peter's homestead and farm is close to the current village of Rycroft (about 7 kms south of Rycroft, south on Hwy 2 and then left at Twp Rd 774 and then right at Range Road 54). However, at that time the area was known as the Spirit River Settlement in the Peace River Country of Alberta, and his mailing address was Spirit River.

The Letter of Patent was stamped stamped on 20 May 1921.

6. Residence - 1916, 1 Jun 1916, Rycroft, Alberta, Canada. 6557 Peter Skaret, head of household, age 33 <1893> born in Norway; emigrated 1914; farmer (homestead). Wife Lena, age 25 born in Norway <1891>. Children, John age 4 <1912> born in Norway and Alfreda age 2 <1914> born in Norway.

Also recorded in the household is Martin Olsen Skaret, recorded as a brother, BUT this is incorrect. Martin and Peter Skaret are 4th cousins.

7. Residence - 1921, 1 Jun 1921, Rycroft, Alberta, Canada. 6561 Peter Skaret household (indexed as Sperat on Ancestry). Peter age 38 born in Norway, emigrated in 1914 and naturalized 1920, farmer. Wife, recorded as Marrie, age 38 [?] born in Norway. Children, recorded as Jane or Joyce [likely John], age 8 born in Norway [but also recorded as a daughter?], Alfred [recorded as a boy?, but likely daughter Alfreda] age 6 born in Norway; Gilbert age 3 and Arthur age 8 mos, both born in Alta.

Peter's residence is recorded as Sec 22, Twp 77, Range 5, W 6th. This location is about 7 kms south of the town of Rycroft.

8. Residence, 1928-1932, 1928-1932, Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. 6562 There are a number of articles published in the Prince George Citizen (a newspaper in Prince George, BC). I have copied most of these in a PDF file (see my computer file folder) and I have summarized these articles in Peter Skaret's biographical sketch). In summary, Peter is recorded as a gold prospector who found some placer gold east of Prince George. The area became known as Skaret Creek. The amount of gold he found is uncertain.

9. Residence, 1935-1955, 1935-1955, Prince George, British Columbia, Canada. 6563 Peter Skaret is recorded as living in Prince George, BC from 1935-1955. Most of the directories indicate his occupation/occupation is a "Prospector." The source for these records is in the BC Cities and Towns Directory Collection digitalized by the Vancouver Public Library. I have a short document (in my computer folder; "Peter, John, Gilbert Skaret, BC directories" document) summarizing the years and location of Peter and his sons John and Gilbert from the BC (see,)

It is likely Peter lived in the town Prince George and surrounding area since at least 1928 until his old age when he moved to Kamloops, BC

10. Residence, Sept 1963, Sep 1963, Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. 6549 Peter's death certificate (May 1966) records his address as 421 Columbia Street in Kamloops and notes that he has lived at that address for 2 years and 8 months (Sept 1963). See Biographical Sketch for more details.
