** John Broen, the son, is not recorded in either the 1901 or 1906 Canada Census. In 1901 he would have been about 5 years old and in 1906, about 10 years. I don't have explanation for him not being on the Census records - the enumerator thought he already had John Broen, but this woul have been the father --------------- 1. death: Provincial Archives of Alberta
John Broen, identity number, 423; year is not recorded -- BUT see last line on this section; this is in the group, 1877-1918, page 4, 2nd side of PDF [search; first click the main page for "1877-1950", then search letter "B" then letter of the first vowel; so in this case "Bo"; scroll to page 4, then on second side, abt mid page] Broen, John; address Bitten Lake, no 423; then series L - on the page for directions / how to locate ... there is the notation that prior to 1918, there was a "letter" assigned to the death: in this case "L" refers to the year 1908
Thus, John Broen (the son) died in 1908
John Broen, the son, would have been born in the later part of 1894 or early 1895 and Jun 1896 at the latest [Thomas Asy, b 29 Mar 1897 - 9 months prior to his birth would 29 Jun 1896]
NOTE: in the AB homestead records, John E Broen reports that his family took up residence on the homestead about 10 Jul 1899, and that on his homestead was his wife and 5 children - - Einar, b 1894, John 1895/1896, Thomas Asy, b 1897, Erik, b 1899, Ingvard 1900 [Josephine was born in Nov 1902]
2. Ancestry.com has a record of the death of John Broen in 1908, However, their collection is based on the above and so it is not likely that it provides more detail
3. 1901 or 1906, Canada Census: son John Broen is NOT recorded with the family ?????? no explanation
4. I have looked on the University of Calgary; Camrose Canadian, 3 Dec 1908 to 4 Feb 1909 https://cdm22007.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p22007coll18/id/142236
- it looks like the first issue of the Camrose Canadian was 3 Dec 1908 (Camrose Public Library microfilms also start with this date) - 31 Dec 1908, page 1; there is a notice that the previous issue did not get printed by the "The Bulletin Company" of Edmonton .... and that the Camrose Canadian issue was not published
- BUT I did not see any reference to a death of John Broen, 1908, and so he likely died prior to Dec 1908. Note: there was a paper called the "Camrose Mail", but I can't find the date of the first issue. - from "Alberta Newspapers, 1880-1982: An Historical Directory" by Gloria M. Strathern. 1988 University of Alberta Press page 53: Captain T. Berville Thomas established the Camrose Mail on July 1906, closing his plant three months after establishing the Camrose Canadian. The Canadian purchased the plant of the Camrose Mail on February 1, 1909 and the paper began publishing in 1909 (the Alberta Digitaliztion Project - University of Calgary, has issues from 1908???
NOTE: Peel Prairie Provinces has digital images of The Wetaskiwin Times and although it is difficult to search, the paper did have a section usually called "Camrose", and some of the information from the Camrose Mail but have not seen a reference to John Broen, died 1908
Note the Old Scandia Cemetery burials listings incorrectly records the death and buiral of John Broen (died 1933) and his wife Mary (died 1961) - they are actually buired at Scandia cemetery. It appears that the reference to John Broen actually should refer to John Broen, the son, who died in 1908. There is a listing for Eric Broen, 1898 - Bef 31 Dec 1932, and for Ingvard, b 1900- bet 1916/1921 [although the listing of burials indicated death in 1933 - but I don't believe this is correct] - noted 8 Jul 2022

..... 10 Dec 1908, page 6, first column, likely under "Local and Personal" "T. Korstad and family left on Saturday on an extended trip to Brookings, S.D."
... 14 Jan 1909, page 78, col 3,4, "Clippings from Various Sources" "T. Korstad and wife of Camrose, Alberta, arrived the latter part of this week for an extended visit at the home of his brother, John, an other brother left last week for Clovis, New Mexico to look after his claim". The Brooklyn County Press, South Dakota.
Noted events in his life were:
1. Birth/Death, Between 1892 and 1899, Kulm, LaMoure Co, North Dakota, United States. John E Broen's obituary of 1933 states that he was predeceased by 5 sons, two who died in North Dakota (Einar and John) and three who died in Alberta (Eric, Ingvard, and John). Mary's obit of 1960 notes that she was predeceased by 5 sons; however, the sons are not named.
I have not been able to find a birth or death record for the second son named John. The second John would have been born after the death of the 1st John, but I haven'n found any inforation on the birth or death the the 1st John. I have estimated the 2nd John's birth between 1892 and 1899 and his death between Jul 1899 and Mar 1901 since the 2nd John is not recorded in the 1901 Canada Census since John and Mary were married in 1892 and that they had come to Alberta by Jul 1899 when they took residence on the homestead in the Armena district.
