Staff Sergeant Botten was a gunner on a B36D bomber with the 9th Bomber Squadron, 7th Bomber Wing assigned to Carswell Air Force Base, Texas. On May 6. 1951, the aircraft was enroute from Carswell AFB to Kirkland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It crashed during the landing at Kirkland AFB, killing 23 on board. Staff Sergeant Botten was awarded the National Defense Service Medal.
