Esten Toresen Solem, born in 1684 at Sørgarden on Solem in Støren. Died between 1762-1769 . Esten Toresen, was named after his grandfather who lived at Dalsbygda. He took over Sørgarden on Solem in Storen before his father died. He must have moved from the farm with the meadow before [he was at ] Hytthaugen in Budalen [and later] to Solem (Solemsøya), an island beside the river Ena. The legend says [it has been said] that Esten began with the making of charcoal [kølbrenning]. He ran [hauled] the charcoal to the plant at Kvikne over the mountains in the winter with two [loads] (gamper??) and had a boy to drive the horse. At Kvikne there was a place with bunks [near] the stone Hiåsjøene. He had married Gunhild Olsdatter who the Swedes had threatened death by axes [made of thick steel] (eggstål) during the [armed conflict or march] Armfeldttoget in 1718. The men lay on the forest ground with their and axes hidden. Finally they [Swedes] came for the day, and a soldier held his axe at the neck of Gunhild. She believed that she would have been axed. After a time [when it had enough] " stop gumman ! " Gunhild replied calmly: - a hooded wart eat had bit me, so [if you hurt me you will get wars]. Think about it." The Swedes got their horse as they saddled up, [took] a sheepskin coat with a sheepskin and meat and two loads of hay. They also took brought two barrels of barley and a barrel of oats, cheese and butter. Gunhild [and ?] received 24 riksdaler and 6 skilling in the claims settlement of 1719.
Gunhild and Esten had three daughters.
