Lisbeth Marie Mortensdtr Elgåen (1859-1931) Biographical Sketch

Lisbeth Marie Mortensdtr Elgåen was born on 17 Feb 1859 in the Tufsingdalen area of the Os/Tolga clerical district in Hedmark county, Norway. She was a first cousin once removed of my grandfather Lars Thoresen Grue (1887-1958) through his mother's father's side of the family. Lisbeth Marie's mother (Berit Lucie Mikkelsdtr Midtdal) was a sister to Lars' mother, Berit Sophia Mikkelsdtr Midtdal.

Lisbeth Marie Mortensdtr Elgåen was the daughter of Morten Davidsen Elgåen and Berit Lucie Mikkelsdtr Midtdal (1826-1875). In 1883 she decided to emigrate to the United States; I have not been able to find where she first went to in the US. It is possible that she went to her aunt's (Berit Sopfie and Lars Mikkelsen) in Clay Co, MN. In 1884 she married Peder Estensen Sæther (this date corresponds with US Federal Census Records). The US Federal Census Records indicate that the family surname changed to 'Sather' and that Lisbeth used Marie or Maria as her first name. Marie's (Lisbeth) family lived on a farm in Brandsvold Twp, Polk Co, MN (near the town of Fosston). Marie and Peder had 6 children who were Olia, Edwin, Lisa, Gea, Selmer, and Mabel.

I have not been able to find (or confirm) very much information on this family and so more research is needed. It appears that Olia was also known as Othelia; she was married to Hans Sorgaard and they farmed in Columbia Twp, Polk Co. Edwin (and Mabel) were not married, but continued to farm the homeplace after their parents died. Edwin died in 1974 and Mabel died in 1972. Selmer had died in 1911 at the age of about 17. These children are buried at the Kingo Cemetery in Fosston. I have not been able to find any information on Lisa or Gea.

Records show that Marie died in 1931 and that Peder died in 1939. Both are buried at the Kingo Cemetery in Fosston, MN.

Conclusion: since the Norway Parish Records are digitized copies of the original source and the information is likely to be primary since it was recorded close to the event and likely provided by the mother/father, I have recorded on the Legacy database the birth as 17 Feb 1859
