Ole Olsen Moen (1875-1960) Biographical Sketch

Written by Rueben D Grue, 21 Jul 2013

Ole Olsen Moen was born on 4 Nov 1875 in the Tufsingdalen area of the Os/Tolga clerical district in Hedmark county, Norway. Ole Olsen Moen was a second cousin of my grandfather Lars Thoresen Grue (1887-1958) through Lars' mother (Berit Sophie Mikkelsdtr Mikkelson, 1861-1952) and her mother's side of the family. Ole Olsen Moen and Lars Thoresen were also fouth cousins through Lar's mother's father (Lars [Syl] Mikkelsen, 1830-1922). Ole Olsen Moen died on 26 Dec 1960 at Stanwood, Snohomish Co, Washington, United States.

Ole Olsen Moen (born in 1875) was the son of Ole Olsen Moen (1844-1901) and Kristina Marit Ingrebretsdtr Moen. On 5 Jun 1896 Ole Olsen married Olava Larsdtr Karlstrøm (1876-1964). In the 1900 census of Norway, Ole and Olava were living at the Moen søndre farm in Tolga (Tufsingdalen area). It is not certain when they emigrated to North America, but it is likely between 1902-1904. I have not been able to locate an emigration record; the 1910 US census records 1904 but the 1930 US census records 1902. There is some indication that the family had been in Canada for awhile, since a record in the "Border Crossings, Canada to the US" records the family crossing into Washington State in Mar 1910 and that their previous address was Wetaskiwin, Alberta. However, the family is not recorded or indexed on the 1906 Census of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. It should be noted that Ole Olsen Moen was a cousin of the John Johnsen Midtdal family that had settled in the Westrose/Battle Lake area west of Wetaskiwin (this family relationship was quite distant in that they were sixth cousins, once removed). It is possible that the Ole Olsen family spent some time with the John Johnsen Midtdal family.

Ole Olsen Moen and his family are recorded in the 1910 US Census (enumeration in June 1910) in Skagit Co, Washington state. They are living in the same dwelling or another cousin (Anton Sandmel, sixth cousin). In the 1930 US Census, the Ole Olsen Moen family is also recorded living in Skagit Co operating their own Dairy Farm. In 1940 Ole and Olava are recorded living at Village Precinct in Snohomoish Co (this is only a few miles from their farm in Skagit Co) \endash it is likely that their older son had taken over the farm. Ole was 64 years old in 1940 and was recorded working as a Carpenter. It appears that Ole and Olava raised their family in Skagit Co; for awhile they lived at township of Bow and then later in the area around the town of Lyman, Skagit Co.

Ole Olsen Moen died on 26 Dec 1960 at Stanwood, Snohomish Co, Washington. Olava died on 19 Dec 1964 at Stanwood. There is a record of Ole's burial at the Anderson Cemetery in Stanwood, but I haven't found a record of Olava's burial.

Ole and Olava had 5 children. The youngest was born in 1897 in Norway and died about one month later. Ole Melkor Moen (known as Melkor Ole Moen) was born on 2 Jan 1900 in Norway. He married Edythe Marchant in 1921 in Skagit Co, WA. Melkor and Edythe had 4 children (Marjorie, James, Donald and Linda). Melkor died in 1976 on Orcas Island in San Jaun Co, WA; his wife died in 1993.

Ole and Olava Moen's third child was Olga Louise Moen. She was born in 1902 in Norway. In 1922 she was married to Ole A Berg and they lived in Seattle. Ole was also known as Olaf (or sometimes spelled Olof); he was born in Sweden and his parents had emigrated to Canada and farmed west of Wetaskiwn, AB. Olga was tragically killed in a motor vechile accident on 31 Aug 1934 (she is buried in a cemetery in Seattle). Apparently the other driver was at fault and there was a small court settlement in 1935. Ole and Olga had 3 children who were Richard, Roy, and June. Ole had remarried in 1939 and had 2 other sons; Ole died 5 Mar 1985.

Einar Moen was Ole and Olava's fourth child. Little information has been found regarding him. He was born on 23 Mar 1909 and it appears that he was born in Canada (likely in the Wetaskiwin, Alberta area). He died at age 12 on 13 Jun 1921 in Skagit Co, WA.

George Ole Moen was the youngest child of Ole and Olava. He was born on 18 Jul 1914 in Sagit Co. Little information has been found. It does not appear that he was married. He likely worked on farms in Snohomoish Co, WA. It also appears that he participated in a number of logging competitions (sawing etc) and so it is also possible he worked in the logging industry. George died on the 3 May 2005 in Stanwood, Snohomish, Co.

bullet  Research Notes:

My grandfather, Lars Thoresen Grue [1887-1958] was a 2nd cousin to Ole Olsen Moen. This relationship is through my grandfather's mother's ancestors - Berit Larsdtr Mikkelsen [1861-1952] and further back to ancestor
Mikkel Larsen Midtdal [1793-1877].

Ole emigrated from the Tufsingdalen/Os area in 1903 and by 1905, they had come to Canada. It is likely they first went to a distant cousin John Johnsen Moen and family who lived in the Westerose area west of Wetaskiwin. In the 1906 census of the Prairie Provinces they were living on a farm north the Falun area and few Kms east of John Moen's place. In Mar 1910 the family moved to Skagit Co, WA area and then later to Stanwood, Snohomish Co.
