John Halstensen Olson

   Another name for John was Ole Johan Halstensen Narjord.

Summary:

Ole Johan Halstensen Narjord was my 3rd cousin, 2 times removed. His grandmother was Sigri Estensdtr Grue, 1795-1871. Sigri was the grand daughter of my 4th great grandfather, Jon Simensen Grue, 1729-1829.

Ole Johan Halstensen Narjord was known in the US as John H Olson, and this is the name that I have recorded on my Legacy database although I have used his middle name, Halstensen. He is my 3rd half cousin, twice removed. His grandmother was Sigri Estendatter Grue [1795-1871] and she was the grandaughter of my 4th great-grandfather, Jon Simensen Grue, 1729-1807.

Ole Johan Halstensen left Tolga parish Norway in 1888 and came directly to North Dakota. I am not sure why he came to this area, other than homestead land was not likely readily available in Iowa or Minnesota. He had obtained a homestead and on 10 Sep 1898, he received the patent for SW¼ of Section 28 in Olson Twp, Towner Co. However, an interesting piece of information, is that John H Olson made the first payment on the land on 14 Apr 1892 [see point 3.d.]. John H Olson likely arrived in the US sometime in May or Jun 1888. If he had gone directly to North Dakota in 1888 as noted in the Towner Co families book [see point 3.c], he would have come to Towner Co in 1888. If this was the case, he must have worked on various farms in the area, or possibly he squatted on the land, since he had not taken out the homestead entry for another 4 years. I also am not sure if he knew others who had gone to this area of North Dakota.

It is also possible that John H Olson had first gone to the Waterloo Ridge area in Winneshiek and Allamakee Co, Iowa. His aunt, Johanna Olsdatter Narjord [1843-1933] and her husband [Mikkel P Narjord, b 1828] farmed in Highland Twp, Winneshiek Co. He also had a second cousin, Johannes S Narjord, who farmed in Waterloo Twp, Allamakee Co. Johannes and his family left Tolga in 1879; however, Johannes had died in 1886. If John H Olson had first come to this area, he likely would have been able to save some money from working in the area since it was reasonably populated at the time. It would also potentially explain meeting and dating Gea Persdatter Narjord, his eventual wife, particularly if he visited Johannes Narjorg. She likely lived with her mother and step-father in Allamakee Co, mostly likely in the community village of Quandahl. The Towner Co families book records they were married in Jul 1894 at Bisbee, Towner Co. The timeline would fit: In 1888 John goes to Waterloo Ridge area; 1891-1892 he travels to Towner Co, ND and files for homestead in Apr 1892; in 1894, possibly 1893, Gea moves to John's homestead. Of course, the above is speculation, and I think it is unlikely that I will find information that proves why he went to Towner Co to homestead, or for that matter, why he went to Williams Co, ND in the early 1920s.

John and Gea had 5 children, and all likely were born on the farm in Towner Co, North Dakota. Some records record they lived in Cando, but that was the nearest 'village'.

Sometime between 1920 and 1925, John and Gea Olson and at least 2 children, Harry and Gerhart moved to Brooklyn Twp, Williams Co, ND, about 40 kms north east of Williston. They also farmed in this area. It is possible that they moved to Williams Co, ND since John's brother, Halfdan had moved to Ray, Williams Co, North Dakota around 1905. Halfdan Olson owned a general store in the town of Ray, about 10 kms north-east of the Wheeler, ND area.

By 1935, John and Gea had moved to the Sandpoint area in Bonner Co, Idaho, most likely since their daughter Irene and her family moved to Idaho. John died in 1947 and Gea in 1955.
