Biographical Sketch: Julia (Gurine) Torgerson, 1874-1929

Written by Rueben D Grue, 31 Jan 2017; First Revision, 10 Sept 2017; © 2017. All rights reserved

Julia (Gurine) Torgerson's parents were Torger Olson and Kirsti Movold (1852-1917). Kirsti Movold's mother was Marit Olsdtr Røstbakken (1820-1904) who was a sister to my great great grandmother, Olava Olsdtr Røstbakken (1823-1919).

At some point, Gurine started to use the given name, Julia. She is known by family descendants as Julia and many of the source records use Julia. On my Legacy database, I have used Julia as her given name, but also note that she is also known as Gurine.

Part A, Birth: there is some discrepancy with Julia's birth date

Julia's birth of 12 Dec 1874 is based on family records, specifically a handwritten note by Orrin Torgerson (born 1910, died 1993; Julia was his aunt). The date of this note is unclear but possibly in the early 1980's (see my document on my PC folder, Kirsti Movold-Torgerson, re; Greggory Adams post on family search). This note records basic birth/death information on Torger Olson's family. His second marriage was to Kirsti Movold in 1871 and they had 6 children. The recorded birth date for Julia (birth name as Gurine) on this note is 12 Dec 1874 (died 29 Jun 192-). Most of the family trees that are available record this date and it was their likely source for the birth (Dawna Lund on familysearch and also on rootsweb.ancestry, Glen Torgerson email, Linda Petsch - Solhiem on myheritage).

However, Julia's tombstone inscription records her birth 1876. Is this an error?

In trying to determine her birth, I have looked at a number of records, including the above noted information and available census. These records are inconsistent. Three of the records record her birth as 1874, three as 1875, and 2 as 1876. Likely the most accurate record is the 1875 MN State Census. This records Gurine's age as '0'. Since the enumeration was 1 May 1875 and the age recorded is suppose to be as of last birthday, then Gurine was born in 1874. Some records record the month of her birth as Dec. In the 1875 MN State census, Gurine's age is '0' and if her birth month is Dec, then her birth must have been in Dec 1874. The informant was likely either Kirsti or Torger and it seems unlikely they or the enumerator would have been confused with the question or the age (even if the informant was an older child or a neighbor, it is likely that they knew Gurine was a baby and was less than a year old). In the 1885 MN State Census, Julia's age is recorded as '10', and if she was born in the month of Dec, then her birth date would have been Dec 1874. The 1880 US Federal census records her age as '5' and so her birth would be Dec 1874. The two MN State Census records are likely the most accurate, particularly the 1875 record since it is the record that is closest to the event and likely the informant was Gurine (Julia). Julia is not recorded with the family in the 1895 MN State Census.

Julia is not recorded with the family in the 1900 US census. One other source (Linda Petsch-Solhiem database on myheritage), notes she left home and went out west at the age of 14 (about 1888). The 1900 US census does have a record for a person named Julia Torgerson, born in Minnesota, living in Lewiston, Idaho. She is recorded as a 'boarder' to the head of household and that her occupation is a student. Her age is recorded as 23 with her birth month in Dec. However, this record records her birth year as 1876 (if her birth was Dec 1874, she would have to be abt 25 years old). It is likely that Julia would have been the person to tell the enumerator that she was born in Dec 1876, but it is not known why she gave this birth. Did she not know her actual birth year? Although this seems unlikely, there may not have been as much attention to birthdays at that time as it is today. Reporting her birth as 1876, may have meant she wanted to be younger than she actually was. But of course the enumerator could simply have mistakenly recorded the incorrect birth year.

The 1910 US Census records her living in Seattle and married 4 years earlier to Thomas A Korstad. Her marriage to Thomas Korstad is recorded on Washington states digital archives, with a date of 24 Dec 1905, with their marriage in Seattle (Thomas' surname is indexed as Kurstad, but on the image itself, it is more likely to be Korstad or Karstad). Thomas is from Bellingham and Julia is from Oakesdale [WA] (this is the same place location as her burial). Witnesses are M Korstad, possibly Martin who was a brother to Thomas, and S. J. Lund (this is likely Sam J Lund, married to Thomas' sister, Bertha Marie Korstad (see her marriage record on Washington digital). The 1910 US Census records her age as 28, but this would put her birth as 1882 or maybe as early as 1881. This date is most likely a mistake, since this is the only record that gives that birth year.

The 1920 US Census has Julia E Korstad and Thomas living in Treffy Twp in Benewah County, Idaho. Thomas is recorded as a farmer. Julia's age is 44, making her birth year as 1875 (if her birth was in 1874, her age should have been recorded as 45).

Finally, her death is recorded as 28 June 1929 in Spokane Washington. On her death certificate (WA digital archives, indexed with surname Karstad) and on her notices of death and funeral in the Spokane newspaper, her age is recorded as 53. If she was born in the month of December, then at age 53 her last birth date would have been in Dec 1875. And yet, on her tombstone her birth is recorded as 1876. Julia she is buried at the Oakesdale Cemetery in Oakesdale, WA (see findagrave post). Her tombstone also notes her middle initial as "E" with this initial also recorded in the 1920 US Federal Census record (other records do not record a middle initial).

Clearly, there is no consistent evidence that her birth was on 12 Dec 1874. I have not found a birth certificate or birth return (it is possible that a record of birth is recorded at the courthouse in Fergus Falls). The birthdate of 12 Dec 1874 is likely the most accurate and I have used this date on my Legacy database, and is my conclusion. The birth date on her tombstone is likely incorrect.

Part B, Julia's travels

The Linda Petsch-Solhiem database on myheritage includes a number of photos and copies of the written notes. One note (regarding a biography of Esther Petsch) mentions that Julia left home at an early age of 14 (about 1888) and went out west. This note also indicates that Julia "… had made her way through music school and after a few years became a much beloved music instructor of piano and violin." There is no source information for this note, nor have I found any collaborating evidence for that Julia was a piano or violin teacher. Although it is possible that Julia traveled on her own, it is unlikely. The most likely possibility is that she left with some other family member or relative or with another neighbor family, but I have not found any evidence.

What information I have been able to find is a record from the Spokane City Directories (R L Polk) on Ancestry.com's US City Directories Collection for the years 1896 and 1897. This records Julia Torgerson as a student with the Spokane Business College (image 300 for 1896; she is not recorded in the directories for 1895, 1899 or 1901). Reviewing the History of Spokane County published in 1900 (on archive.com), it seems that a business college was established in Spokane by 1887 "... it had normal, shorthand, collegiate, assaying and commercial departments … had suspended operation " few months ago " [about 1899] and another college (Blair College) had opened with courses in bookkeeping, shorthand, typewriting, penmanship, normal, English, elocution, music...".

As indicated above, Julia was living in Lewiston, Idaho in 1900 (1900 US census) and she was recorded as a student and had been in attendance at school for 9 months. This would mean she would have started school in the beginning of September 1899. At the time of writing, the only school for adults in Lewiston ID is the Lewiston State Normal School (the first class was in 1896; Normal Schools were established to train Teachers). I have found evidence that Julia attended this school (Normal school commencement for 23 students in the Lewiston Teller newspaper for 7 Jun 1900, but unfortunately the names of the students were not mentioned. However, in a Lewiston Teller newspaper article on 16 May 1900 there is an article titled, "Teachers' Institute". This records the names of the students with a transcription as follows: "The Teachers' Institute is now in session at the Normal School. Forty seven teachers are in attendance ..." Following are their names: [including] Martin Korstad, Thomas Korstad, Julia Targerson [? likely Torgerson]. This article confirms both Thomas Korstad and Julia Torgerson were at the Normal School in Lewiston and that they most likely graduated in Jun 1900 as "teachers." I have not found any other information that she was a "music teacher", as recorded in the biography of Esther Petsch (see page 2).

Julia was married on 12 Dec 1905 in Seattle (Washington Digital archives). The marriage took place that the "Lund house, 706 27 Ave, Seattle". Witnesses recorded were S J Lund (likely Sam Lund who was married to Thomas' sister, Bertha) and M Korstad, likely Martin Korstad, Thomas' brother. The marriage also notes that Thomas was from Bellingham and that Julia was from Oakesdale, Washington, about 70 kms south of Spokane (this is the same location where Julia was buried). Thomas is recorded living in Bellingham in 1904 and in 1906 and in 1907 in Wenachee (ancestry's US Cities Directories) and so likely Julia also lived in these places. In a newspaper article in The Wenatchee Daily World (6 Mar 1907, page 3, col 7): "Skookum Club Meets" ... at the roller rink ... among those present who are becoming proficient in the sport were: ..............., Mrs Korstad, .... ". Thus she lived in Wenatchee in 1907, which corresponds to the record that her husband, Thomas Korstad was a teacher in Wenachee.

In the 1910 US Federal Census, Julia and Thomas are recorded living in Seattle, WA. Julia's record shows she the wife of Thomas Korstad, married for 4 years, no children born in Minnesota. Thomas was born in Iowa (parents were Norwegian), rents home, was working as a 'mechanic in artificial limbs industry [as of 15 Apr 1910].

By May 1910, Thomas and Julia took a homestead in Idaho (Lots 1, 2, 3, SW¼NE¼, Sec 3, Twp 45N, Range 3W, Idaho [actually this was within Kootenai County]; see US Homestead Track Books). The date of the first receipt payment for entry was 13 May 1910, with the final payment on 23 Apr 1917 and the patent issued on 6 Aug 1917. They lived on this land, likely until her death in 1929 (Thomas continued to live on the farm into the early 1930's). Their mailing address in Sep 1918 was St Maries, Benewah Co, ID (Thomas' WW 1 draft registration card).

An interesting note to the homestead land in Idaho. In May of 1909, US President Taft had proclaimed what I understand named, the Allotment Act. What this act allowed was the opening of the Coeur d' Alene Indian Reservation lands that had not been selected by the tribe members to homestead (the same occurred for the Spokane Reserve in Washington and for the Flathead Reserve in western Montana). This "free land" generated a lot of interest with some 3,000 applications for about 1,250 claims. Names were randomly drawn, and one of the names was "T.A. Korstad".

Julia died on 28 Jun 1929 at Spokane. She had been in the Deacones hospital in Spokane since the 11 Jun 1929. Julia was buried in the Oakesdale cemetery in Oakesdale, Washington (funeral notice in the Spokane newspaper).

I have no evidence that Julia and Thomas had any children.

Part C, Thomas Korstad

Thomas A Korstad remarried 6 months Julia's death, on 29 Dec 1929 in Olympia, WA to Leonta Pauline Rees (she was from Seattle - see WA Digital archives). Thomas and Leonita are recorded in the 1930 US Census in Treffy Twp, Benewah Co, ID. Leonita died 12 Dec 1933 in Seattle. Thomas is recorded in the 1940 US Federal Census living in Seattle and working at a Gas station. Thomas married again on 26 Jan 1941 to Susannah L Lackorn, (her maiden name was Susanna L Grange) in Seattle. This was her second marriage with the first to Walter F Lackorn; she had 2 children from her first marriage, Walter E and Elizabeth. Susannah died in 1948 (obit from Seattle Times, 2 Jan 1949).

Thomas Albert Korstad died on 11 Mar 1953 in Seattle (WA Digital Archives). His obituary is posted on Seattle Times (15 Mar 1953, page 40, col 3; re, Genealogybank.com), but this obit does not mention Julia (his other wife's also are not mentioned). His obituary notes that he graduated from the Northern Idaho State Teacher's College in 1896 [likely the Lewiston State Normal School), and that he attended Western Washington State Teacher's College in Bellingham. The obituary also notes that he received a Bachelor of Science degree from University of Washington in 1903 (on genealogybank there are a couple of articles from The Seattle Times regarding Thomas graduating from the College of Liberal Arts and there is also page that has his photo). Although I am not certain, there are similarities to the photo of Thomas posted on the Linda Solheim Petsch, database). In the University of Washington school yearbook, Tyee, he is recorded in 1903 as a junior with his photo, and also in a group photo with the Debating Club (he was also the debating club President). There are a couple of other photos in the 1903 Tyee yearbook that include Thomas. In the 1904 yearbook, Thomas is noted as graduating in Economics and notes that he was a graduate of Whatcom Normal School in 1901. The yearbooks are a bit confusing since the 1903 book says he is a junior, but in fact he graduated in 1903 but this doesn't get recorded until the 1904 year book (image 62 on ancestry collection). On another article in The Seattle Times it is noted that he is visiting his sister in Seattle and that he is teaching at Whatcom High School in Bellingham (17 Apr 1904, page 19, col 4). The obituary further notes that he was a teacher in Bellingham and Wenatchee (and he is recorded in both Bellingham and Wenatchee on the US Cities Directories on Ancestry). In 1906 edition he is recorded living in Bellingham and in 1907 in Wenatchee, so it is likely that Julia was also living in both places since they married on 24 Dec 1905.

At least two of Thomas' brother's, Martin and Fred, had also attended the University of Washington in Seattle at the same time as Thomas. Martin graduated with a degree in Law and practiced in Seattle. Fred also had a Law but never practiced law (see his obituary and a newspaper article in the Seattle Times). Thomas' sister, Bertha, was also teacher (1900 census has her in Arlington, WA). Thomas' other brother, Hans Martinus Korstad had received a Bachelor of Education Degree in May 1900 (Tyee yearbook).

There is another record on Ancestry's school yearbook collection. In the 1916 yearbook Eleness for Lewiston State Normal school, Thomas is recorded on the Alumni page as an alumni, Class of 1900 (image 112). His brother Martin is also an alumni of 1900 and it noted he is an Attorney in Seattle. Julia Korstad is not recorded in this year book.

I have some additional information on the Korstad family that includes information on Thomas, his siblings, his parents, and siblings of Thomas' father. This is included on my PC computer folder Korstads, under Oliver and Mary Grue.

There are some quarter sections which are reputed to be worth as much as $20,000. There is also some agricultural land upon this reservation which is very valuable, being located in the rich wheat belt of the north."

Linda Solhiem-Petsch database does not record the date or location of Julia's marriage. However, the date and location is recorded on the WA Digital marriage certicate and notes that the marriage took place that the "Lund house, 706 27 Ave, Seattle".
