bullet  Research Notes:

1.

- Haglund database - suggests death in Saskatchewan, but includes ?
- Western Land Grants - a number of homesteads under Alfred Johnson, 2-3 in the Weyburn area
(not noted as Alfred S Johnson

2. Western Land Grants

- Alfred S Johnson; NE Sec 21, Twp 3, Range 21, W of 2nd - this is in the Rural Municipality of Surprise Valley, near Minton, SK - Minton is abt 40 Km south of Ceylon; Twp 3, Range 21 would be abt 10 KM west of Minton (near the edge of Big Muddy Lake) -- this it likely the correct homestead

++ from on-line digital maps - Survery of the Western part of the Dominion - 1904, 1907; www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~canmaps

- shows Canadian Pacific Railway (Branch Line), from North Portal to Estevan to Weyburn to Moose Jaw
- west of Weyburn, no communities noted; shows a rise in the land; Coal is written - indicating the possibility for some mineral/mine;
- a bit to the south, community (marked with a dot) is Surprise Valley; the next community to the west is Willow Bunch)
- a dotted line (-----), just north of Weyburn (marked by a flag), west over "open country" and a bit north of Surprise Valley, west to Willow Bunch, Wood Moutain, and East End (marked by a flag)
---- unfortunately, the on-line map does not provide legend; "flag" likely refers to a Mounted Police Station" the dotted line is likely a well known or traveled trail - possibly used by the NWMP between stations?
