Haagen Nilsen

   Another name for Haagen was Hågen Nelson.

Summary:

Hågen/Haagen Nilson was my 5th cousin. See his grandfather's page for some relationship information - Gjermund Jonsen Lillebo, b 1775.

In 1867, Haagen married Helene Halvorsdatter, b 1835. Haagen and Helene had at least 3 children [I have not found more children born and died]. For a few years they lived on the farm, Søndre Svingen, about 20 kms south of Dresvj in the north eastern part of Engerdal Parish [at the time the boundaries of the farm were within Rendal parish].

In Apr 1888, Haagen, Helene and their 3 boys left the farm for North America - they must have sailed from Olso. The Norway Emigration record notes that their designation was Renville Co in Minnesota. I have not found other family members or neighbors that had moved to Renville Co, MN earlier, so I do not know why were bound for that location.

The earliest record of the family is from the 1895 MN State Census for Ericson Twp, Renville Co, MN. This records records Haagen Nelson, son Halvor and son Reinhold. Helene is not recorded, nor his son Nels. Note, that the 1895 MN State Census does not record the maritial status of individuals. However, the 1900 US Federal Census does - in this record Haggen is recorded as a Widow. Thus, we can be certain that Helene died before 1 Jun 1900, but since she was recorded in the 1895 MN State Census, it is most likely she had died before 1 Jun 1895. Since she is noted as leaving Norway in Apr 1884, since may have died on the ship or later in MN. There is no burial recorded in the Shiloh Lutheran Church, but the first deaths/funeral is on I have recorded her death as "bet 1884-1895".

It appears that around 1902, Haagen and son Halvor went to the eastern area of Bottineau Co, North Datoka. I think it is likely that prior to this, Haagen's son Nels [b 1868] had been in the area of Bottineau Co, ND - the north eastern part of Bottineau Co is in an area known as Turtle Mountains that extends from south of Brandon, Manitoba into the is part of North Dakota.

Haagen Nilsen had made a homestead entry on Sec 27, with the initial payment of $10 on 2 Jan 1902. According to the US Track Books [Vol 89, Twp 162 N Rge 74; US federal ledgers recording land transfers, and a source for homesteads]. Son Nils made his initial payment on 23 Nov 1899 [but isn't indexed on Ancestry at Bottineau Co], and Son Halvor made his initial payment on 27 Mar 1900 [Halvor is recorded with his father and brother Reinhold at Ericson Twp, Renville Co, MN in the 1900 US Census]. Haagen is recorded with his son Reinhold and Reinhold's wife and children in the 1910 US Census in Reville Co. Note that Haagen had sold his land in ND to sons Halvor and Nels in 1916.

Haagen Nilsen died on 29 Mar 1917 and is buried at Fairview Cemetery in Renville Co - it is likely that Helene Halvorsdatter is also buried at Fairview Cemetery, although findagrave does not post a photo of her gravemarker or the date of her death.

Son Nels, b in 1868, died on 15 Apr 1959. He was not married and was living in the town of Madison, Lac qui Parle Co, MN - not far from the ND border [note that the date of birth for Nels is incorrectly noted as 1870 on findagrave].

Son Halvor, b in 1873, died 11 Feb 1956 in Minneapolis. Halvor had moved to Hardin Co, IA sometime in the early 1920s. He was married on 25 Jul 1923 in Hardin Co, IA, and had lived there until the 1940s when he and wife Laura moved to Minneapolis.

Son Reinhold/Reinholt, b in 1876, died 21 Jun 1915 in Renville Co. On the 6 May 1903 he was married to Josephine Otella Roste. Reinholt and Josephine had 6 children. Reinhodt continued farming in Ericson Twp, and after he died in 1915, his wife and sons [at least Victor and Rudoph] continued on the farm into the 1950s. Three of their children were married and had children. Their other children were either single or married later in life and did not have children. Note I have not researched his children or descendants - information used is from the Brudevold Family Tree on Ancestry.
