Research Notes:
Summary:
Johanne Kristina Halvorsdatter Lillebo is my 5th half Cousin, 4 times removed, and so, my relationship is quite distant. But keeping to one of mine goals to follow family relations who have emigrated to the US or Canada from Norway or Sweden, I have done some extensive research. Also see her father's page.
There is difficulty finding collaborating evidence. What we do know was that she was born in 1854 at the farm known as Søndre Lillebo. This area now is within the boundaries of Engerdal parish, but at the time of her birth it was considered part of Rendal parish with the local parish being Drevsjø just south of lake Femund, near the Swedish border.
We also have evidence from the Norway Parish registers that Johnne Kristina was married to Johan Halvorsen on 2 Jul 1880. Johanne and Johan Halvorsen had 2 children: Halvor born in 1881 and Martin born in 1885. The Engerdal parish records record the family leaving the parish and on 16 May 1889 they are registered at Trondheim, leaving for the Dakotas in the US.
I have found the family recorded in the 1900 US Census in Lyons Twp, Minnehaha County, South Dakota. Why did they go to this location? The reason is most likely due to the fact that Johanne Kristina's sister Marit and her brother Martin had settled in Lyons Twp. There were a few other families from the general area of Norway that settled either in Lyons or Svedrup Twps - Jørgen Elgaaen family and Amund Rosten family to name a couple. I also found the family at Minnehaha Co, SD in the South Dakota Census [enumeration, 1 May 1905]. John and Johanne Kristina were also likely sponsors for the baptism of Oscar Melvin Nordvie at Nidaros Lutheran Church baptism [Minnehaha Co, SD].
I should mention that other Family Trees on Ancestry, FamilySearch, Geni, or Geneanet do not have any information on Johanne Kristina's family. The Bygebok for Engerdal [vol 1, page 454] notes that Johanne Kristina Halvorsdatter Lillebo was married to Johan Halvorsen and that they left for North America in 1889, but the farm history book doesn't record any other information. And it was from this source that I used to start for the search for Johanne Kristina's family.
I next found that Johanne Kristina and family had left SD in the summer of 1905 or possibly in 1906 for Alberta. At the same time or near the same time, Johanne Kristina's sister Marit [married to Olaf Nordvie], her brother Martin, and other families [such as Jorgen Elgaaen family] had taken a homestead entry in the area east and a couple of kms north of Forestburg in the communty area known as Pleasington.
John Halvorsen's homestead entry was on 19 Feb 1906. His address at the time was the Spring Lake post office that was likely opened in 1904 at Hastings Coolie community [this is a bit west of Forestburg and closer to Donalda]. The homestead was located about 8 kms east of Forestburg, junction of Hwy 53 and Rge Rd 143. Both sons Halver and Martin also took out homesteads next to their father and so the family had 3/4 of a section of land.
It is not clear when Johanne Kristina died
