Settled in Otter Tail County, Minnesota in 1877 and rented a tract of land. For 10 years, they followed the occupation of farming and in 1887 they migrated to Washington with five children (Nels, Julius, Carl, Minnie and Johnnie). John made the trip of the Stillaguiamish in a canoe and purchased the preemption right to a quarter section of land situated two miles northeast of Silvana. The tract was covered with a dense growth of trees and there were no roads. In 1906, he built a barn 104 feet by 70 feet. In 1911, they built a modern residence with a full basement and containing eleven rooms.
