Ingeborg Johnsdtr Sømåen

  • Born: 2 Feb 1818, Tolga, Hedmark, Norway 10348

  Research Notes:

Summary:

Ingeborg Johnsdatter was my 2nd half-cousin, 4 times removed. I would have a double relationship with her from descendants of the Moen/Østgård families and the Feragen/Langeland families. Descendants from these two family groups lead to my great-grandparents, Lars Mikkelson [1830-1922] and Berit Sophie Mikkelsdatter Midtdal [1832-1899] - their daughter, Berit Larsdtr Mikkelson married Thore Simensen Grue [1853-1932] who were my great-grandparents.

There seems to be a number of unknowns in relation to Ingeborg Jonsdtr [the surname Sømåen was not likely used in practical way in the 1800s, but I have used the name to assist in distinguishing her from other individuals].

What we do know with a reasonable level of confidence is this:

- Ingeborg was born on 2 Feb 1818, and baptised in Tolga parish in Hedmark Co, Norway.
- Ingeborg's father was John Knudsen, 1784-1861, and Johanna Ingebretsdtr Moen, 1782-1852 - Johanna was born in the Tolga Parish, and John born at Sømåhaugen farm which at that time was within the boundaries of Rendal parish. They were married in 1812 at Tolga.
- John and Johanna lived at Sømåhaugen, Rendal parish - I think the farm is in the general area is Sømådalen, and this is only about 5 kms south of the farm Langsjøen which is located near the southern outlet of lake Langsjøen [Søndmør farm is a little north at the northern end of lake Langsjøen]
- John Knutsen and Johanna Ingebretsdatter had 6 children, all born in Rendal parish; their 4th child was Ingeborg Johnsdatter, b 1818
- Ingeborg Johnsdatter, b 1818 was confirmed in Tolga Parish in 1834 .. this record notes her name as Ingeborg Johnsdtr Somadalen and records her parents, John Knudsen and Johanne Embretsdtr from Sømåen

There are other pieces of information that are much more difficult to verify:

1. The Bygebok for Engerdal [vol 2, pages 130 and 131] makes the following comment in regards to the daughter Ingeborg: Ingeborg was a widow when she had a child Ingeborg who born[?] 20/12 1850 with Salomon Olsen, Fløtningen [from Sweden]. She continued to live at Sømåhaugen or lived at Sømåhaugen at that time [that is, 1850]. It is not known who she had been married to [since she is noted to be a widow].
... I have reviewed the Rendal parish record for a person name Ingeborg [Salomonsdatter] for 20 Dec 1850. The parish record does record the death of Ingeborg Salomonsdatter on 20 Dec 1850, at the age of 5 months - Cal birth, 15 Jun 1850. The residence at her death was Sømåhaugen
... However, there is no corresponding birth/baptism record for Ingeborg Salomonsdtr in the Rendal parish records nor in the 3 volumes of the Togla-Os parish records
Thus, Ingeborg Johnsdatter Sømåen likely did have a daughter named Ingeborg who was born and who died in 1850. But, I can't verfy this since the above burial record does not specify who the mother was, and there is no corresponding birth/baptism record.

2. Referring to the same entry from the Bygebok for Engerdal [vol 2, pages 130 and 131], it is suggested but does not specifically say, that Ingeborg Salomonsdatter who died in Dec 1850 had been born outside of marriage. The Bygebok names the father of this Ingeborg as Salomon Olsen and then states that "it is not known who she [referring to Ingeborg Johnsdatter b 1818] is married to."

Thus, the burial record for Ingeborg Salomonsdtr and the note in the Bygebok for Engerdal seem to correspond.

But ... there is still no evidence in the Norway parish register that Ingeborg Johnsdatter, b 1818, was in fact married even though the Bygebok for Engerdal notes her as "an Enke," meaning a Widow. I haven't found any marriage record for her.

3. Family Trees .... viewed in Apr 2025

See below for the family trees I have reviewed. The first two Ancestry Family Trees [FTs] record some information but both do not provide any explanation or any discussion regarding the information they note, and also do not provide some vital source information.

Østerdal Connections FT and the Berg-Esterby FT both record that Ingeborg Jonsdatter Sømäen or Sømahaugen was married on 2 Oct 1842 to Embret Jonsen Lillebo who was born in 1819 at the farm Lillebo. At that time period Lillebo was within the boundaries of Trysil parish. These FTs also note that Embret Jonsen died in 1846 in Sweden.
... however, these 2 FTs do not provide any source information for the marriage or the birth/death of Embret Jonsen.
... I have reviewed on 2-3 occasions [12 Apr, the last 14 Apr 2025] the Rendal, Tolga, Trysil, and Røros parish records looking for a marriage record for the date of 2 Oct 1842 . Their marriage is NOT recorded. I have also looked for Embret Jonsen's birth of 1819, but I also could NOT find his birth/baptism record.
... The Østerdal Connections FT references the Bygebok for Engerdal, vol 2 page 442 and 443 in relation to families on the farm Lillebo. The FT notes that Embret Jonsen was born in 1819, with his father as Jon Jonsen, b 1769, and mother as Marie Johnsdtr Dammen from the farm Lillebo north. On page 443 of the Bygebok, the children of Jon Jonsen and Marie are noted. However, the page also notes that Marie had 2 other children that were born after she became a widow, but the name of the father of those children is not noted. Jon Jonsen, b 1769, died in 1816 - Embret Jonsen born in 1819, and so he could not have been the son of this Jon Jonsen.

... both of the above Ancestry FTs record that Ingeborg Jonsdatter b 1818 and Embret Jonsen b 1819 had at least 2 children: John Embretsen [note that there are a number of spelling variations of the patronmyic] born in 1842 and Maria Embretsdatter b 1845. But again their baptism records are NOT recorded in Rendal, Tolga or Trysil parish records.

... I started to think that there might be more than one Ingeborg Jonsdatter who lived in the Sømådal area .. and there are others ...
But then with further research ... see point 4 below

4. Sweden records:

Østerdal Connections FT and the Berg-Esterby FT on Ancestry both note that Embret Jonsen died in 1846 at Skærvagen, Dalarna, Sweden. Dalarna is more of a district rather than a parish, although it appears that in more modern times the area is within Dalarna. But since it is known that the farms in the Lillebo area of Trysil parish in Norway are located near the Swedish border. In fact, Idre parish in Sweden was a part of Norway before the the 1751 boundary treaty with Norway/Sweden.

Skärvagen is within the Idre parish boundaries in Kopparberg län/county. Skärvagen is only about 10 kms in a north easterly direction from Lillebo and the border. According to Google Maps, there is a gravel road traveling north at the junction of Hwy 70, about 5 kms east of the Norway/Swedish border at Lillebo.

The Ancestry.com collection for the Swedish church books is difficult to use and is not very searchable [Sweden Arkivdigital is much user friendly, but I no longer have a subscription, at least in April 2025].

So, from previous experience with Swedish church records, I knew that Idre parish was within Kopparberg län. By manually searching the Husförhör book or household examination, for Idre for the years 1840-1850, I found the likely family for Ingeborg Jonsdatter:

... I can't make out the comments, but it appears that the family left their home in Idre on 10 Aug 1853 [Swedish moving out records record them leaving on 17 Jul 1853] and it seems that they may have stayed for awhile at some other place or places either in Sweden or in Norway

**** summary based on above information that I reviewed in the Idre parish, Sweden:

Ingeborg Jonsdatter b 1817/1818, was born at Sømåhaugen, Rendal, and on 2 Oct 1842 married Embret Jonson, b 1 Jun 1819 at Lillebo, Trysil parish. It is assumed that they were married in Norway but no marriage record is recorded in any of the parish registers for the area [Rendal, Tolga, Trysil, R Sometime 1842, the family moved to Skärvagen in Idre Parish, Kopparberg lan in Sweden.
... Ingeborg Johnsdatter and Embret Jonsen had at least 2 children:
1. Jo or Jon or John, b 29 Aug 1840 at Sømåhaugen, Rendal [aka, John Engebretsen]
2. Maria [Embretsdatter], b 16 Aug 1845 in Skärvagen, Idre parish, Sweden
.. Embret drowned on 10 Jun 1846 in Idre ... Ingeborg and the 2 children continued to live at Skärvagen until Mar or July 1853 when it appears they left Idre or at least left their home at Skärvagen - their leaving the parish is noted in the Idre 'out-migration' record
... the family, Ingeborg, Jon, and Maria returned to Sømähaugen in 1855, but are recorded as arriving in Rendal in 1847 ??? .... the written comments in the Rendal parish register, "moving-in" is hard to read and is confusing. It seems that they stayed for while at various places and it seems that they may lived in Tolga parish for awhile, from Aug 1853 to May 1855 at a place of K Harlens
-- BUT it is almost impossible to verify or know for certain .

Conclusion:

Although the information is incomplete and at times confusing, it is reasonable to conclude that Ingeborg Johnsdatter Sømåen had been married to Embret Jonsen from Lillebo. In 1842 they moved to Skärvagen in Idre parish, Kopparberg - only about 10 kms from the Norway/Swedish border at Lillebo, Norway. On 10 Aug 1846 Embret drowned in the lake Skärvagsjön. It is not clear how he drowned but it's possible that he was on the lake, maybe fishing, and the boat capsized.

Ingeborg and the two children continued to live at Skärvagen until the Mar or Jul of 1853 when they left their home at Skärvagen and for Ingeborg return to Sømåhaugen in Rendal parish, Norway.

It is believed that they family continued to live in the Sømåhaugen area for a number of years.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

The following information is regarding Ingeborg Johnsdatter's daughter, Maria Embretsdatter.

As indicate, Maria was born at Skärvagen in Idre parish, Sweden. Maria, along with her mother and brother John, left Skärvagen in 1853 [her father died at Skärvagen in 1846]. It is assumed that she lived with her mother at a house/hut on the farm known as Sømåhaugen in Rendal parish in Hedmark county [sometime around 1910/11, this farm came under the boundary of Engerdal parish.

Maria was confirmed at age 16 on 27 Oct 1861 at the Rendalen parish. At the time she was likely living at the farm Bjontegaard søndre - this is also where she was living at the census of 1865, working as a servant. On her confirmation record, she was born in Idre og Särna parish in Sweden on 16 Aug 1845, and her parents recorded as Engebret Johnsen og Ingebor Johnsdatter Sømaahaugen. Note that confirmation records often record the names of the parents.

Maria Engebretsdatter was married 11 Jan 1870 at the age of 25. Her husband was Peder Engebretsen, aka Peder Embretsen, living at Bolståd or Braaten, although the marriage record also indicates that he was a gårdmann [gårmand], the owner of a farm at Femundsenden [this area is at the southern shores of lake Femund]. His father was recorded as Engebret Bolståd.

[1].that she was married to Embret Johnsen Lillebo, b 1819 at Lillebo, Trysil parish, Hedmark.
.. And states that the marriage was on 2 Oct 1842. However, the FT does NOT record or link to a marriage record or provide any comments ... on 12 Apr 2025, I reviewed the marriage records for the years 1836-1844 for Rendal parish, but Ingeborg Johnsdatter was not recorded. However, I did find a marriage record in Rendal for Ingeborg's sister, Johanne Johnsdtr from Sømåhuag, age 22 [b 1820] ... interestly she was married on 2 Oct 1842 [see link, https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/9192/238 ] .... has the FT made a mistake ?????
.. on 12 Apr 2025 I also reviewed parish records of Tolga and Trysil but did not find a record [years 1840-1844]
.. it is possible that that Ingeborg Jonsdtr married in Sweden, but there is no out-migration record for her in Rendal [years 1822-1846]

The FT references the Bygebok for Engerdal, vol 2 page 442 and 443 in reference to families on the farm Lillebo. As mentioned above, the FT records that Ingeborg Johnsdtr b 1818 at Sømåhaugen married Embret Johnsen Lillebo and that he was born in 1819, with his father as Jon Jonsen, b 1769, and mother as Marie Johnsdtr Dammen from the farm Lillebo north. page 443 of the Bygebok records the childrebn of Jon Jonsen and Marie. However, the page also notes that Marie 2 other children that were born when she was a widow but the father is not noted. Jon Jonsen, b 1769, died in 1816 - Embret Jonsen could not have been the son of Jon Jonsen, b 1769 and died in 1816.
.. on 12 Apr 2025, I reviewed births/baptisms for the 4 volumes of the Trysil parish registers for the years 1818-1823, but did not find birth for Embret Johnsen born in 1819 nor his brother Mikkel b in 1822. Nor is there a record of Embret Jonsen leaving Trysil parish, 1825-1835 or so... I also looked at births in Røros parish for the years 1818-1820 looking for a birth of Embret Jonsen and also reviewed some years aroudn 1830 for any type of marriage record for Ingeborg Johnsdtr in the Røros parish, but found no record

.. is it possible Embret Jonsen was born in Sweden ??? .. the Lillebo area bordered Sweden and it is possible that people crossed from Norway to Sweden and vice-versa often, ... and as I mentioned above there is it possible that Ingeborg Johnsdstr b 1818 and Embret Jonsen were married in Sweden ??

[2] Since I could not find a marriage record for Ingeborg Johnsdtr b 1818 in the various parish records, I began wondering if there was another person name Ingeborg or a spelling variation of this given name, along with a patronmyic of Jonsdatter or a spelling variation. I looked specifically in Rendal parish registers in the earlier part of Apr 2025.
.. I did find a person named Ingri Jonsdtr, b 18 May 1819, bap 20 Jun .... her parents Jon Jonsen, Nordre Unset and Marit Hougensdatter .... *** this is the only person named Ingeborg or a variation of given name and Johnsdtr as a patronymic [there are a couple of other Ingeborg but with the wrong patonmyic] in the 1817 time frame +/- 2 yrs
