Research Notes:
Summary:
Mikkel is my 1st cousin 3 times removed. Mikkel's mother, Benedikte Mikkelsdatter Midtdal [1882-1898] was a sister to my 2nd great-grandmother, Beret Sofie Mikkelsdatter Midtdal [1832-1899] - Beret Sofie was married to Lars Mikkelson, 1830-1922 and their daughter was my great grandmother, Berit Sophie Larsdtr Midtdal [1861-1952]. Mikkel and my great-grandparents, Thore Simensen Grue [1853-1932] and Berit Sophie Larsdtr Midtdal were of the same generation.
Mikkel was born on 2 Jun 1848 at the farm Midtdalen in Tufsingdalen in Tolga Parish, Norway. His parents moved a few times, first to Moen and then to the farm Øybakken. In the 1865 Norway Census, Mikkel Olsen is likely working on the farm Sæter/Seter Nordre at age 18.
In 1870, Mikkel Olsen Moen left Tolga parish for America. As indicated below [points 1 and 4], Mikkel traveled with Eli Marie Jensdatter and their son, Jens. However, Mikkel and Eli Marie were not married when they left Norway, but were married in Apr 1871 in Winneshiek Co, IA.
Mikkel O Moen and family lived in or near McGregor, Clayton Co, Iowa area, until 1879. On 5 May 1879, Mikkel had made an initial payment on his homestead quarter - SE¼ of Sec 30, Twp 161N and Range 48W of the 5th. He made his final payment on 10 May 1884 and a patent was issued on 15 Aug 1884. Mikkel's homestead quarter was in Thompson Twp, Kittson Co, Minnesota.
It is not clear how Mikkel and his family traveled from northeastern Iowa to northwestern Minnesota, by way of Fargo, North Dakota. It seems that the most direct route would be to take a steamboat from McGregor, IA up the Missississippi to St Paul MN. From St Paul, they may have taken a train on the St Paul and Pacific Railroad main line to Breckenridge, MN/Wahpeton, ND [the railroad had reached Breckenridge by 1870] and then likely by 1879 a steamboat on the Red River to Fargo.
An alternate route may be gone from St Paul MN on a Branch Line of the St Paul and Pacific Railroad north to Brainerd MN, and it appears that this line had reached Brainerd as early as 1877. It then joined the Great Northern Railway [that started at Duluth] and then westward to Fargo. The Great Northern reached Fargo in 1872. I have not conducted a significant amount research on the various railroads. But apparently there was a railway, St. Paul,Minneapolis, and Manitoba railroad, and the first train arrived at St Vincent in 1878. However, it is not clear if there was a passenger service this early.
From the newspaper article regarding Mikkel and Eli Marie/Mary's 60th wedding anniversary, it is noted that they had taken a steamboat on the Red River at Fargo. The steamboat was named the "International" and it plied the Red River from Fargo to Fort Garry in Manitoba. The article further notes that the Mikkel and family disembarked at the junction of the Red River and Two Rivers. The article says that Mikkel was impressed by the land, its timber along the banks of the rivers and the prairie landscape. Two Rivers had its origins in the Lake of The Woods region and flowed mostly in a westerly direction until it's confluence with the Red River. The article also says that near the mouth of Two Rivers was Andrew Jerome's landing.
Andrew Jerome / André Jerome was a Metis born near Fort Garry in Manitoba. He had been a scout and for a time he was involved in the Red River Rebillion with Louis Reil. André Jerome came to the confluence of Two Rivers and Red River in May 1872, and he is thought to have been the first homesteader in Kittson Co, MN. Note, that I have researched him somewhat and created a text document [My PC ... gen resources ... misc families].
After landing at André Jerome's place, Mikkel and his family [with 4 young children] organized themselves to go and find a homestead. There are no direct articles that mention the trip to the homestead land, just south of the current town of Hallock in Kittson Co [a distance of about 2 kms from Hallock]. It seems reasonable that Mikkel had some type of land guide, possibly one of André Jerome's sons [Jerome was a known scout and guide]. At the very least he must have received some directions and some suggestions for good homestead/farm land. It seems reasonable that the family followed the banks of Two Rivers scouting for suitable land and after about 20 kms of travel, Mikkel choose the land south of Hallock in Thompson Twp. Mikkel is recorded making the initial on his homestead quarter [see point 7] on 5 May 1879. From what I understand Mikkel would have had to appear before a government "Land Agent" and complete paperwork including a signed affidavit, as well as the "administrative paymment of $10".
Mikkel and his family likely walked back to the André Jerome's place. Remember that in 1879, Betsy was the oldest child, and she would have been about 7 years old and Tilda, the youngest was only 1 year old. It is unlikely Mikkel would have left his family at the homestead. At André Jerome's place, Mikkel [and maybe the family] likely took a steamboat south, possibly to Grand Forks, ND and then walked to Crookson and the land office, a distance of about 40 kms [there may have been some type of navigation on the Red Lake River from Grand Forks to Crookson, but I do not know. Note Mikkel's payment was made on 5 May 1879, and so this means, that he and his family would have traveled to the homestead as early as April 1879, in the spring of the year.
On one account [see point 7.b], Mikkel had met with a person named Nils Paulson in Fargo. Apparently, they agreed that Mikkel would also find Nils Paulson a suitable homestead. This account also indicates that in the fall of 1879, Nils Paulson and Mikkel travelled to the homestead and began cutting logs with and made board lumber witht a 'whip-saw'. Traveling in the fall is not likely accurate. It makes more sense that Mikkel had gone back with his family to the homestead in later May and then spent the summer cutting logs and working on building the log cabin on the homestead. Then, as now, the winter weather could be brutal. As I have indicated, it is not clear what supplies and livestock Mikkel and Eli Marie had brought with them to the hometead. It is possible that they were able to get supplies at Grand Forks [a number steamboats stopped there in the 1870s]. This source [The Compendium] was published in 1902 and it reports that the family still lived in the log house in early 1900. The 1901 Plat of Thompson Twp [Kittson Co Museum facebook page] show the house building on the SE¼ close to the north east corner of the quarter. The homestead was about 2 kms south of the town of Hallock and around 10 kms east of the Red River. The homestead farm was only about 20 kms from the US - Canada border. The family purchased the adjacent quarters so by 1912 or possibly earlier, the farmstead included a total of 520 acres [see point 7].
Mikkel is recorded as a carpenter in the 1880 US Census, and then as a farmer in the subsequent census records as a farmer [1900 - 1930]. He took interest in the early affairs of his township and assisted in its organization, and he also served on the first township board. Mikkel and Eli Maria likely lived on the homestead until they died. Mikkel died on 17 Mar 1932 he died at the age of 83. Eli Marie, also known as Ellen Mary, died a little more than 3 years later on 27 Nov 1935. They are both buried at the Bethlehem Cemetery in Thompson Twp, Kittson Co.

* the Ancestry Family Trees all note that he was married. One of his children was born in 1905 in WI and a church record records the child's parents as Ole Moen and Emma. However, all the census records [US Fed and MN State] record that Ole was "single" and lived in Kittson Co. So, Ole Moen recorded in the WI church record is a "different person that named Ole Moen", and it is most likely that 'our' Ole Moen was not married or had a relationship or had 2 children.

And, "Kittson County History", 1979.*
Combining the 2 sources - Our Northwest, 1976 and Kittson Co History, 1979 ... following timeline for Bethlehem Lutheran Church 1892 - congregation founded and had purchased land for a cemetery and future church on NE corner of the NE¼ Sec 23 1898 - consitution ... first aligned with Eidsvold Lutheran at Halma [south east of Bethlehem] 1899 - church built, with front facing north ... cemetery approved by MN State 1901 - aligned with Skjeberg congregation in Teinen Twp [just north and east of Drayton, ND] 1913 - church destroyed by tornado 1914 - church rebuilt, facing east 1926 - start of English, previously in Norwegian 1948, 1949 - part of the Drayton parish, along with Kennedy, Donaldson, Skjeberg 1949 - disbanded ... members either to First Lutheran north east of Lancaster or Two Rivers in Hallock .. church building sold to First Lutheran .. 1971 ... congregation disolved
BUT starting with Olaf M Norlie's book on Norwegian Congregations**, Bethlehem was at first a part of Two River congregration at Hallock which was a Swedish American Lutheran Church, established between 1883 and 1885 *** But in 1898 the Norwegians split and formed Bethlehem Norwegian Evangelican Church and initially the services were in Norwegian. Apparently, the Bethlehem congregation disbanded in 1971.
However, if you look at the 1912 Plat and also on the 1901 Plat there are a number of Churches noted, BUT the name of the church is not recorded. On both Plats, a church and cemetery is recorded on the SW¼ of Sec 23, near the road allowance. After considerable research, I have found that this is the Two River Lutheran Church and cemetery - it is alongside "County Road 22" or 240 St and east of the junction of Co Rd and 290 Ave. And according to the photos posted on Findagrave, it was the former site of the Two River Lutheran Church [see street view on Google Maps]. This area was closest to Mikkel and Eli Marie's homestead.
As indicated above, the Two River Lutheran Swedish congregation split in 1898, and the Norwegians formed Bethlehem Lutheran Church. The site of the Bethlehem Cemetry is only about 1.8 kms from Two River, at the junction of 290 St and 250 Ave, and is located on the northeast corner of the NE¼ of Section 23 [2497-290 Ave]. The photos posted on Findagrave show a "church bell" - one photo was posted in Apr 2007, another in May 2008, and another on May 2013. Viewing Google Earth in Nov 2024, it appears the that bell has been removed [note that there is no street view on Google Maps]
* note that the book has not been posted online. It is available at the Hallock Public Library in Hallock, MN ... I have to emailed the Northwest Regional Library in Thief River Falls, MN .... email sent to the Hallock library, 24 Nov 2024 at 9:10 .. received the scanned pages, 4 Dec 2024 .. see Mikkel's folder ... the submission for Mikkel O Moen's family is quite short and appears to be, in part, from the text of the Compendium ... Northern MN [see point 7.b] ... nothing new - but the photo of the family [late 1890s] is clearer than the one posted on the FTs
** also sent me additional page about the Bethlehem Lutheran Church from the book, Kitson County History, by the Kittson County Historical Society, 1979. Josten/American Yearbook Company. Topeka, Kansas [some references this as the Gold or Yellow book] - this combined from the 'red book' gives more information. ** Norlie's book, image/page 783 ... https://archive.org/details/norsklutherskemevol1norl/page/783/mode/1up?view=theater
