Note: Martin Bakke was born outside of marriage, possibly at Lillehammer, Oppland Co, Norway on 18 Feb 1876. On 20 Jul 1876, at the age of 5 months, he and his mother, Tonetta Arlien, left Oslo for North America. Their designation was recorded as New Albin, IA. New Albin is in the north eastern corner of Allamakee Co.
In the 1880 US Census, Martin and his mother are recorded at Waterloo Twp, Allamakee Co, IA. Likely in 1884 or possibly in 1883, Tonetta and Martin went to Bergen Twp, Nelson Co, ND where Tonetta's father had initiated a homestead claim [sec 22].
On 20 Jan 1885, Tonetta Arlien married my cousin, Anders Mikkelson Bakke [Bakke], who had initiated a homestead claim in Jan 1885. Martin would have been about 9 years old at that time. It appears that Martin used the surname 'Bakke' in the US.
Martin did not married and did not have children. He died in 1944 and according to the ND death certificate, he was buried on 15 Oct 1944 at Sheyenne Lutheran Cemetery [there is no record on findagrave, but see my notes regarding his mother's burial]
