Summary:

Christopher Boreson, b 1839, was my 2nd cousin 4 times removed. His father was also known as Børre Olsen Hammersgaard (Gjermundshaugen).

Remember that in the 1800s [and maybe even earlier] Norway naming practices included a given name and then the
patronymic name [son of or daughter of]. Often the name of the farm was used in the name. The purpose of using
farm name was to distingush where the person was living or working, and also to distinguish individuals with the same
given and patronymic name. In Norway, Christopher's given name was spelled as Kristoffer and his patronymic name
was Børresen [that is the son of Børre]. It is likely that Kristoffer lived at the farm Lille Ljørdalen when he was
younger and early twenties - this is based on the 1865 Norway Census. According to the Trysilboka, vol 1, page 527, the farm Tekta was also called Lille Lørdalen, which is the name of the farm in the matrikel [tax books]. Tekta/Lille Lørdalen is third oldest farm in Ljørdalsgrenda [Ljørdals area] and was likely first settled by Jon Jonsen Lørdalen [b 1624] in 1657.

At one point Kristoffer Børresen and his family lived at the farm Bakken, less than a half km north from his parents. Trysilboka does record his name as Kristoffer Børresen Bakken, but I think the use of name "Bakken" was more to indicate his farm location. By 1883 [likely earlier] people started to use more permanent surnames, if they hadn't already. Sometime before 1883, Kristoffer Børresen and his family were living on the farm Kværnbæk, and it was from this farm that the Kristoffer, Maren, Kersti, and Karl [known as Charles in the US] left for North America.
