bullet  Research Notes:

Johanna Jacobsdatter Moen (Hojaas), 1876-1954

Johanne's mother was Anne Johnsdtr Moen [1837-1920]. Anne Johnsdtr was not married, so Johanne was born outside of wedlock. Norway Parish records note that Johanne's birth was in Tolga parish with her father noted as Tollef Kuntsen [Hammer] and her mother as Anne Johnsdtr Moen.

Johanne's patronmyic name is confusing. Under the usual Norway naming pattern, her patronmyic name should be Tollefsdatter, the daughter of Tollef. So the question is why was she known in Norway as Johanne Jacobsdatter. I have not found a definitive reason. However, in the 1891 Norway Census Johnanne Jacobsdatter is recorded as a "foster daughter" with parents as Jon Jonsen and Kari Persdatter. Thus, it is likely that Anne Johnsdatter Moen was not involved in the early care of Johanne, and had left the baby with another family with the head of household with a given name of "Jacob". This is reasonable explanation, but I have no proof or verificationb. Also note that as I indicated in point 2 below, there is a possibility that Tolleff Knutsen was not Johanne's father and it might be that the actual father may have a given name of "Jacob".

Johanne was married in 1893 to Iver Johnsen, and shortly after their marriage they left Tolga for North America. I have not found them on any emigration records.

When Iver and Johanne Johnsen first came to the US, they moved to the area around Rindal in Polk Co, Minnesota. They may have stayed there for a couple of years, but by 1895 they were living on a farm in Brandsvold Twp in Polk County [east of Fosston]. By 1900 the family was living a bit further east in Shelvin Twp, Beltrami Co, MN [in 1902, this area became part of Clearwater Co, MN.

But sometime before April of 1902, the family had moved to Ten Mile precinct in Whatcom Co, Washington. This date is noted since their fourth child, was born on 28 Apr 1902 in Whatcom. The family move a few other times after 1910, but seems to have stayed the area around Anacortes, in Skagit Co, WA.

Johanne and Iver Johnson had 7 children; the 3 oldest were born in Minnesota while the 4 younger children were born in Washington.

From my limited research, it appears that all their children had been married and they had children. I will need to do more research about the family in Washington, and perhaps at somepoint I might find more information on Johanne's time in Norway.

Note that Johanne is my 6th cousin twice removed, and so I am a distance cousin. My relationship is through the ancestor line of my great-grandmother, Berit Sophie Larsdtr Mikkelson [1861-1952] who was married to Thore Simensen Grue [1853-19321].

- also records Johanne's birth/baptism, but again there is a comment at the bottom of the entry for the "parents column" that I can't make out the meaning.

** Note: in the earlier version of the DigitalArkivet, the "official register" was called the "Ministerialbok" and was completed by the parish priest. And, the "parish copy" was called the "Kokkerbok" and was completed by the parish church 'sexton' or clerk.

Norway: 1891 Census

1891 Norway Census for Tolga, enumeration as of 1 Jan 1891; no 13, husliste no 4 ***
with name as Johanne Jakobsdatter with the relationship to the head of the family, as Pleiedatter (Foster Daughter), with the head of the family as

** person 1: Ole Johnsen Ytre - Ousten, b 1841
person 2: Kari Pedersdatter, wife , b 1821
person 3: Inger Kirstine Olsdatter, b 1869; tjenestetyende
person 4: Johanne Jakobsdatter, b 1876; foster daughter
** this corresponds to the Bygdebok for Os : bygda og folket. B. 1; page 222 Ytre-Østu, bnr 305c

** this partially explains the patronmyic name: Jacobsdotter;
since it is likely that the first "foster family" head of household was named Jakob

Note: there is no record in the Norway Parish registers that record Iver and Johanne leaving Tolga parish in 1893
- the US Federal Census for 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 all record their emigration as 1893
- no record on Canadian Passenger lists; nothing on Ellis Island database
- also they are not noted in any 'emigrant' data on Norway's Digital Archives
