Research Notes:
Summary:
Mikkel Larson Mikkelson is my great great uncle. His father was Lars Mikkelson (b 1830) who was my 2nd great-grandfather. Mikkel was born 24 Apr 1857 in Røros parish, Sor Trondelag Co. Mikkel was most likely born at the farm known as Sylen east of lake Femund and close to the Swedish. The baptism records his father as Lars Mikkelson Sylplads - Sylplads would mean the place at the farm Syl or Sylen. Mikkel would have grown up in area around the farm Sylen. He left Norway with his parents on 8 Apr 1870 and with the family as they made their way to Clay Co, MN.
On 3 Feb 1879, Mikkel Larson Mikkelson married Olia Soffie Simensdatter Grue, 1858-1932. Olia was a sister to my great-grandfather, Thore Simenson Grue [1853-1932]. This marriage brings about a double family relationship. Going back to further ancestors for both Mikkel and Olia's, they were in fact also third cousins once removed.
Mikkel's father had homesteaded in Elgon Twp, Clay Co, MN, and just a little north of Lars Mikkelson's homestead, Mikkel had obtained a homestead in Highgrove Twp in Clay Co. Mikkel had first entered a homestead in 1878 and it seems that he and Olia had moved to the homestead when they married. children, with one boy dying within a year of birth. Mikkel and Olia continued to live on the farm homestead. All of the children grew up on the farm. I have information on their children - see each person's research page.

On Sunday, June 28, 1873, the church that would one day become Salem Lutheran Church was founded in the log cabin home of Andreas Larson. The new church was named Buffalo River Evangelical Lutheran Congregation but, more commonly, was known as Synod Church. In 1921, Synod Church joined with Hitterdal United Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation, known as United Church, to form Salem Norwegian Lutheran Church. The word Norwegian was later dropped from the name.
