Summary: parents of Karin Johansdotter

The Fryksände parish marriage record records the marriage of Nils Nilsson Häck/Häkkinen from N Röjdåsen and Karin Johansdotter from Arnsjön on 10 Feb 1760. But this record does not record Karin's birth nor does it make clear who her parents are. The Fryksände and Östmark parish Household Records note that her birth is 1736.

After reviewing all the relevant information, it is not possible to verify the birth or the parents of the person named Karin Johansdotter and the wife of Nils Nilsson Häck/Häkkinen. Thus I have not recorded her parents and have only recorded that her birth is about 1736.

The following points explain the above, but in summary there are really only two possibilities (other options are discussed below) regarding the question of the wife of Nils Nilsson Häck/Häkkinen. Both are first cousins, since their mothers are sisters. One possibility is Karin Johansdotter who was born 4 May 1735 at Runnsjön and the daughter of Johan Johansson (b 1707) and Karin Andersdotter (b 1697). The other possibility is Karin Johansdotter who was born 5 Jan 1736 at Arnsjön and the daughter of Johan Danielsson (b 1704) and Annika Andersdotter (b 1702).

Point 1

Fryksände parish records and then later the Östmark parish Household records consistently record Karin's birth as 1736. But there are at least 2 people born with the name of Karin Johansdotter around 1736 that are relevant to 'our' family. But it seems that 2 of these people died at any early age, one at the age of eight and the other at the age of 6 and both at the farm/village of Arnsjön.

Many family researchers and their Family Trees, either on Disbyt, geni.com, Ancestry or FamilySearch record that the wife of Nils Nilsson Häck (b 1724) was Karin Johansdotter born on 5 Jan 1736 at Arnsjön and that her parents were Annika Andersdotter (b 1702) and Johan Danielsson (b 1704). This seems to be based on the 1760 marriage record of Nils Nilsson Häck (Häcken or Häkkinen) that records Nils Nilsson from North Röjdåsen and Karin Johansdotter from Arnsjön. The marriage record does not record her parents.

Reviewing the Household records from Fryksände parish (AI:7, 1757-1765, page 108, Arnsjön) for the time period of 1760, the family of Bertil (Barthil) Olofsson and Annika Andersdotter are recorded. Bertil Olofsson is Annika's third husband and they were married in 1744. Her second marriage was in 1730 to Johan Danielsson (he had died in Dec 1741). The 7th person of this grouping is "dottern Karin" born 1736. This is quite possibly the daughter of Johan Danielsson and Annika Andersdotter born 5 Jan 1736 (actually she would be a step-daughter of Bertil Olofsson). But her name is crossed off. This usually means that she has moved to another farm or she has died. However if the person died, usually the word "död" is written and often the year. Since the name is only crossed off, she likely moved and it is quite possible that she moved to North Röjdåsen since she may have married Nils Nilsson Häck. Also note that there is an "examination mark" for 13 Feb 1759 and this likely refers to Karin. There is another person written above Karin, born 1736, married or 'gifta or gufta' Karin born 1736. This is actually Karin Eriksdotter, the wife of Daniel Johansson (b 1733). Her actual birth according to the Fryksände birth/baptism book was 2 Jan 1738 (the Household records are inconsistent in the records, sometimes her birth is 1737 and sometimes 1736).

In the earlier Household Records volume (AI:6a, 1752-1757, page 201, Arnsjön), the above family is also recorded. The 5th person recorded is "dottern Karin" b 1736, with her name crossed off. Two lines down is "dottern Karin" born 1746 (this is the daughter of Bertil Olofsson), but then the 12th person recorded is "dottern Karin" b 1736. Are the 2 daughters named Karin the same person? This is likely, since the 5th person named Karin with "examinations" for the years 1752, 1755 and 1757 but not for the year 1756. It is likely that she had gone to another farm in 1756 and then returned to her mother's farm in 1757 where she is recorded again (as the 12th person) with an examination for the year 1757 on 1 November.

As I said above, most Family Trees record that Karin Johansdotter was born on 5 Jan 1736 at Arnsjön with her parents as Annika Andersdotter (b 1702) and Johan Danielsson (b 1704). And it is this Karin that was married in 1760 to Nils Nilsson Häck (Häckken or Häkkenin). This is a reasonable conclusion. Although this is a reasonable conclusion, it is far from definite.

Point 2
. Is there any evidence that contradicts above conclusion?

Kenneth Bergman, another family researcher, has a database on Disbyt and on his own website (direct link, http://www.kenalexis.se/p3a79f4ae.html). I have found that often his information corresponds to the Sweden Parish Records (the only direct evidence that is currently available). However, at times his information does not.

Kenneth Bergman records that Nils Nilsson Häkkinen's second wife was Karin Johansdotter Karjainen born 15 Dec 1734 at Arnsjön. And that this Karin's parents were Johan Matsson (b 1712 at Arnsjön and died 1741 at Arnsjön) and Marit Sigfridsdotter Hämäläinen (born 1707 at Vittjärn and died in 1741 at Arnsjön). Kenneth Bergman then records Nils Nilssson Häkkinen's (Häck) children as other family researches have on other FT's. However, he records their marriage as 10 Dec 1760, but there is no record of this marriage on this date in the Fryksände parish marriage volume (Nils Nilsson Häck's marriage was 10 Feb 1760). Kenneth Bergman and others, all record that the death of Nils Nilsson Häkkinen's wife, Karin Johansdotter was about 1812 at the farm/village of Tallberg in Östmark parish. Unfortunately the death/burial records for the years 1812-1821 in Östmark parish have been lost or destroyed and so her age at death is not known. The last Östmark parish household record that record her is volume AI:7 (1811-1815). She is living at the farm Tallberget and the last examination mark is for 1812, but there is no recording of her death. Most record the death of Karin, Nils Nilsson Häkkinen's wife, as either 1812 or 1813.

Point 3. Since there are a number of people who died at Arnsjön in 1741, I reviewed the Fryksände parish Death/Burial volume (CI:1, page 297). There are 5 deaths in late Dec 1741 (all buried on 10 Jan 1742) and one who died on 10 Jan 1742 (buried 31 Jan):
29 Dec 1741, Olof Matsson, age 35
31 Dec 1741, Johan Matsson, age 32
27 Dec 1741, Marit Sigfridsdotter, age 32 [wife of Johan Matsson]
31 Dec 1741, Karin Johansdotter, age 8
31 Dec 1741, Johan Danielsson, age 41
and then,
10 Jan 1742, Karin Johansdotter, age 6.

Unfortunately, these death records do not record a reason for the deaths. But it would seem likely that there was either some type of accident (house/barn fires) with resulting injuries that led to death. Or some type of illness swept through the area. It seems unusual to have 6 deaths so close together and at the same farm/village.

Point 4. Relevant to the above (point 3), who were the parents of the two children named Karin Johansdotter? It is likely that the first Karin Johansdotter who died on 31 Dec 1741 was the daughter of Johan Matsson and Marit Sigfridsdotter. If she was 8 years old, a calculated birth would be about 31 Dec 1733. But her actual birth was 15 Dec 1734, so it is possible that she would have been 7 years old. Her placement just following her parents make it most likely that this is the daughter of Johan Matsson and Marit Sigfridsdotter, and it is for this reason that I have assumed she was their daughter. But there is no definitive answer.

The other Karin Johansdotter who died on 10 January at age 6 is possibly the daughter of Johan Danielsson and Annika Andersdotter. A calculated birth for this Karin would be 10 Jan 1736 and this is very close to her actual birth of 5 Jan 1736. However, as with the other Karin who died in late 1741, there is no definitive way to determine who her parents were. As I have indicated previously, there are 2 children named Karin Johansdotter and both died at Arnsjön.

I have only found 2 people named Karin Johansdotter who were born (and lived) at Arnsjön at this time period. It is possible that there was another girl named Karin Johansdotter, but her parents are unknown. For example, she could have come to live at Arnsjön with one of the families and that either of the families had essentially "adopted" her and considered her a daughter. BUT it really is impossible to prove this or who the parents were of the two Karin Johansdotter who died 31 Dec 1741 or 10 Jan 1742.

Point 5. Are there any other possibilities for the wife of Nils Nilsson Häck?

To answer this question, I reviewed all births for the years 1734-1737 or the given name of "Karin" and a patronymic name of "Johansdotter".

Using the Fryksände transcribed birth records, I found 29 births with the given name of Karin for the years 1734 and 1737. There are 4 people named Karin with the patronymic name of 'Johansdotter', but only two born at Arnjsön, the persons named above (father Johan Danielsson and father Johan Matsson).

a. One other person was born at Vittjärn and she born in 19 Dec 1736 with her father as Johan Sigfridsson (1702-1742) and mother as Elisabet Olofsdotter (died 1746). There is a FT on Disbyt (Lennart Thegel, id 58715, update 22 Nov 2019; search old version and Fryksände). Lennart records her Finnish Family Name as Hämäläinen and that she had married Klemet Johansson Kaupinen and one FT at MyHeritage (owner not identified). These FTs report that this Karin Johansdotter (b 1736) died in 1809 [her likely death was on 16 Oct 1809 at Hackefallet; Östmark deaths/burials, CI:1 (1765-1818) page 433 no 146 (AID: v9161.b213.s433)]. Throughout the Household records in Östmark parish she is recorded as the wife of Klemet Johansson and her birth is recorded as 1737. Thus, this Karin Johansdotter (b 19 Dec 1736) was NOT married to Nils Nilsson Hack.

b. There is one other person named Karin with a "patronmyic name of Johansdotter". This Karin Johansdotter born on 4 May 1735 at Runnsjön (Fryksände, vol CI:2, p 47) [see point 6 below]. Her parents were Johan Johansson Porka (b 1707) and Karin Andersdotter Hotakka (b 1697, and she was the daughter of my 7th great grandfater, Anders Andersson). Kenneth Bergman uses the above Finnish Family Names of Porka. However, he only records this Karin Johansdotter's birth (1736) and no other information on her. There are a couple of other Family Trees on Disbyt and FamilySearch, but they only record her name and birth with no other information. This Karin's birth is recorded in the Household Records as 1736. She is recorded living with her parents (Johan Johansson and Karin Andersdotter) from her birth to around 1756-1757. In the Household Records volume, AI:6a page 254 (1752-1757) for the farm Runnsjön she is recorded with her parents, but her name is crossed off. There are no "examination marks" for her, but it might be that the priest only recorded the family's examination on 21 Jan 1756 and recorded this on the line corresponding to her father, Johan Johansson. As previously noted, when name is crossed off, it usually means that the person had moved. BUT this record does not record where she moved to. I have reviewed a number of pages in this volume (Östmark, Langerud, North and South Röjdåsen, Multtjarn, Tallberget, Trävåna, Hollandstorp, Gransjön, Arnsjön and Hatacktorp), likely close to 100 pages. The only place I found a person named Karin and born in 1736 was at Arnsjön and the family of Annika Andersdotter (b 1702) and Bartel Olofsson (page 201), as discussed above.

c. The second Karin who born in 1736 recorded at Arnsjön in the household records (AI:6a, page 201), is likely the daughter of Annika Andersdotter (and Johan Danielsson), but it is NOT proven. It could also be the daughter of Johan Johansson and Karin Andersdotter who went to work at Arnsjön, at the home of her aunt. Although this is a possbility, it conflicts with the use of "dottern". The actual residence of Karin Johansdotter, b 4 May 1736 (and parents Johan Johansson and Karin Andersdotter) after she moved from her parents home in Runnsjön is simply not known or proven.

Point 6. Evidence from Fryksände marriage records:

Using the Fryksände transcribed marriage records, there are 2 marriage records that are relevant to a person named Karin Johansdotter born about 1736. The first marriage is with Nils Nilsson Häck/Häkkinen from North Röjdåsen on 10 Dec 1760. As I have already discussed, this marriage record notes that Karin Johansdotter was from Arnsjön and many Family Trees have recorded that she was the daughter of Johan Danielsson and Annika Andersdotter.

There is one other marriage record of note. This is with Henrik Eriksson from Gransjön on 12 Jan 1757. This marriage records that Karin Johansdotter was also from Gransjön. In the household records for Gransjön (AI:6a, 1752-1757, page 183), Karin's birth is recorded as 1736. She is first recorded as a "pige" and then pige is crossed off and in front of it, the word "married" is written. She is married to Henrik Eriksson (b 1727), the 5th person recorded in this grouping. Note that the 4th person is Nils (Eriksson) b 1725 and he is also recorded as married (he was married in 1754 to Elin, the 10th person in this grouping). Karin (Johansdotter) b 1736 has an examination date of 12 Jan 1757, the same day as her marriage.

The household record (AI:6a, p 183) does not note where this Karin (Johansdotter) is from. Although the marriage notes she is from Gransjön, the fact that the household record first records he as a "pige" suggests that she may have come from some other farm or village. Combine this with the fact that there is no person named "Karin Johansdotter" born around 1736 in Gransjön, and thus, it is likely she had come to Gransjön to work.

Where did she come from? This cannot be determined completely. There is only one Family Tree that suggests where she is born. This is the FT of Manuel Aguilar Hendrickson. In the "Ancestor or Ahnentafel Report" that I had received from Manuel on 31 Mar 2019 (p 19), Manuel indicates that Henrik Eriksson's (born 1727) wife was Karin Johansdotter and she was born on 5 Jan 1736 and that her parents were Johan Danielsson (b 1704) and Annika Andersdotter (b 1702) from Arnsjön. There is one Disbyt FT (Jo Carina Wolff, id 09386; date 1 Feb 2006) that also records this relationship, but has no information about Karin Johansdotter, other than her name and birth as 1736.

I have followed the Household records for Gransjön and the family of Henrik Eriksson and Karin Johansdotter. Manuel Aguilar Hendrikson records uses the Finnish Family Name of "Haljainen" and Karin's FFN as "Sikainen" (and her father as Daniel Johansson Sikainen). Henrik Eriksson died 1783 at Nolla (or Nollan) and this Karin Johansdotter died on 23 May 1799 at Nolla (CI:1, p 409 no 22).

See point 5.b above. It is possible that the wife of Henrik Eriksson at Gransjön was Karin Johansdotter was born on 4 May 1735 at Runnsjön and that her parents were Johan Johansson (b 1707) and Karin Andersdotter (b 1702). As I indicated above, there are no examination marks for Karin (AI:6a, p 254), only for her father on 21 Jan 1756. Karin Johansdotter does have an examination mark for 12 Jan 1757 at Gransjön as indicated a couple paragraph's above. Manuel Aguilar Hendrikson records Karin Johansdotter was from Arnsjön, but that she was married on 12 Jan 1757. The Household records for Gransjön has her living at Gransjön in 1757.

Karin Johansdotter, the daughter of Annika Andersdotter (Hotakka) was living at Arnsjön on 11 Nov 1757 based on the examination mark (AI:6a, page 201). It is unlikely that she was married and living at Gransjön on 12 Jan 1757 and also be at Arnsjön in 11 Nov 1757. Also note that Henrik Eriksson and Karin Johansdotter first child was Marit and her birth is recorded as 1 Jan 1757 at Gransjön (CI:3, p 185 no 8). This would indicate that they had a relationship as early as Apr of 1756.

I do not have any proof or evidence, but I think the wife of Henrik Eriksson (Haljainen) was Karin Andersdotter, the daughter of Johan Johansson and Karin Andersdotter from Runnsjön.

The above person named Karin Johansdotter - RIN (record identification number) is 8265.

As indicated above, I have 2 other people named Karin Johansdotter born around 1736.

Karin Johansdotter whose parents were Johan Johansson and Karin Andersdotter - RIN 8180
