The organized neurosurgical activity started at Ullevål Hospital in the 1950s when Kristian Kristiansen returned from Montreal, where he had received his education from the famous brain surgeon Vilder Penfield. Kristiansen, who is known for his work in epilepsy and head injuries, became professor of neurosurgery at the University of Oslo and department head at the Neurosurgical Department of Ullevål from 1964 to 1977. Nils Eie was then head of department until 1978 when he was succeeded by professor and department consultant, Ragnar Nesbakken. Nesbakkens special area was tumors, not least as pituitary tumors. He also made considerable efforts in other areas, including in medical ethics where the oceans contributed greatly to a modern transplantation law. He was also a highly valued lecturer. Nesbakken died 54 years old in 1987.
