John Ingulfsen Bakken (1890-1959) Biographical Sketch

Written by Rueben D Grue, 15 Aug 2013; updated 21 Jul 2015

John Ingulfsen Bakken was born on 2 Nov 1890 on the Midtdalen farm in the Tufsingdalen area of the Os/Tolga clerical district in Hedmark county, Norway. John was a distant cousin (sixth cousin twice removed) of my grandfather Lars Thoresen Grue (1887-1958) through Lars' mother (Berit Sophie Mikkelsdtr Mikkelson, 1861-1952) and her mother's and father's side of the family.

John died in hospital on 1 Nov 1959 in Vancouver, BC, although his residence prior to his death was Creston, BC, Canada.

John Ingulfsen Bakken (born 1890) was the son of Ingulf Jonsen Midtdal (1870-1960) and Sigrid Nilsdtr Bakken (1865-1946). On 22 June 1910 John Bakken married Mina Estensdtr Kvilvang (1891-1950) at the Narbovoll chapel in the Tufsingdalen district. In the 1910 Norway Census they were living on the Bakken nordre (north) farm in the Tufsingdalen district with his parents. Records show that John Bakken left Norway in 1911 and traveled to Alberta, Canada. He likely stayed for awhile with a distant cousin (John John Midtdal) in the Westerose/Falun area west of Wetaskiwin, Alberta. John Bakken obtained a homestead on NE quarter of Sec 18, Twp 45, Range 1, W5th in what is known as the Springdale district of Alberta (about 30 kms south and west of Westerose). In 1912 Mina and their two young children (Ingulf and Ingrid) joined John on the homestead; however, it is not clear if the oldest son, Ingulf Johnsen Bakken came to Canada. Ingulf was born in 1910 and died in 1932 in Norway. He is not recorded with the family in the 1916 or 1921 census for Canada.

John Bakken and Mina had 12 children. Both Ingulf and Ingrid were born in Norway. Ingrid married Olav Johnsen and she died in 1999 in BC. Edwin, Sigfred, Nils, Alfred and Allen were born in Alberta (Nils was born in 1918 and died as an infant in 1918). Mabel, Ralph, Benjamin, James and John were born in British Columbia, likely Cranbrook (John was born in 1938 and died in 1938. The family is recorded on the 1916 Census of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba (his surname is recorded as Buchan). In the 1916 record, it is noted that both John and Mina emigrated in 1912. However, in the 1921 Canada Census, emigration for John is recorded in 1911 and for Mina and Ingrid as 1912.

Records show that John and Mina Bakken moved to BC around Dec 1922. John and his family moved to Wardner, BC area (west of Jaffrey, BC) where he worked for the Crows Nest Lumber Company. John worked in the logging industry and likely continued working in various logging related jobs until his death. John's death certificate indicates that his occupation in 1956 was as Lumber Grader; the death certifcate also he had cancer for about 1 year prior to his death in 1959. Mina Bakken died in 1950 due to a fracture of her skull because of a train accident. According to the death certificate, obituary and newspaper article she was struck by the train while walking across the railroad tracks in Creston - she had not seen the train due to the curve of the tracks.

Around 1926, John and his family moved to Cranbrook. In Cranbrook he started worked in the Cranbrook Sash and Door Company. In the 1930's John operated the Royal Hotel (later known as the Allen). In 1940, John and Mina moved to Creston. He again worked in the logging industry and it appears that he also worked some on the coast. As mentioned he died in 1959.

Many of John's children lived most of their time in the Cranbrook area and vicinity. However, Ben had joined the army and lived most of his time in Ottawa. At some point Sigfred moved to Oregon. Alfred moved to New Westminster, BC and Ingrid lived at Merrit, BC
