Death Came Silently: the Granduc Mine Disaster, by Murray Lundberg
- the town of Stewart BC was established about 1905 at the head of the Portland Canal (Canada's most northern ice-free waterway) - prospectors etc were in the area as early as the late 1890's - mining increased in importance - minor gold boom from about 1907 to the late 1920's with the main gold mine closing in the 1950's - by 1948 copper deposits near Tide Lake [ Granduc ], 30 miles north of Stewart, were identified but it took until 1964 before financing and technology allowed the area to be mined - there was going to be a 11-mile tunnel built - several camps were built, including one for 140 people at the Leduc Glacier - 4 bunkhouses were built etc; - a runway was built, but was only used with good weather --- the rest of the time, cat trains brought in supplies
-- "On the steep mountainsides above Portal Camp of the Granduc Mine, millions of tons of snow let loose at 10:16 AM, February 18, 1965. The survivors mostly remembered that it happened silently, with no warning. Radio operator Innis Kelly managed to get a brief "Mayday" message out.... Virtually the entire camp was wiped out by the avalanche."
