have been told that the Melby Family has its roots in the Verdal, Nord Trondelag area.
The Melby Family farm was called "Melbyvald".
Mette's parents were Johannes and Magnhil Baardsen, and they lived in Verdal on the farm called Melbyvald.
Briefly, Mette Johannesdatter (hence the letter "J" for a middle initial) Melby was born July 25, 1863; married Oliver Olson on April 18,1900; and died on June 3, 1936. Heretofore, all I have known was a birth year and a death year. Mette came to America in 1894, with her brother Gunerius, landing at Ellis Island on September 1, 1894. Her brother Gunerius had already been here but had returned for a visit. Mette and Gunerius came across the Atlantic on the LUCANIA. (The email I received even had a black/white photo of the LUCANIA, but somehow I cannot get it attached to this email. At least I know
what to look for!)
Mette worked in a school in Norway. She also lived with her brother Gunerius and his wife for a while in Minneapolis. She died in her sleep - as you know from her obituary - on June 3, 1936..."which was the same day that her sister-in-law (Mina Melby) died. [doesn't correspond to FT - see point 2]
This person who focusses on the Melby Family is herself a Melby, but married a Jensen. Her uncle even served as the executor of Oliver Olson's will after Oliver died on May 6, 1924.
